Provident Loans..anyone been here?

Am flat broke and need to pay CM ths week and next until payday on 21st..have no credit card (cut it up to avoid more temptation!!)..but need ££ this week , no relatives that could afford to loan us and overdraft been turned down! so looks like options are Provident or the Cash Cheque Shop in Town, obviously Provident sound the easier as you can pay back over 6 months (with HUGE interest!)whereas Money Shop is in 1 lump sum on Payday but a bleak Jan is the norm in our house!
anyone had any dealings with either????

suppose its difficult as the childminder might need the money for her christmas as well. although if you speak to her and explain she might be happy to help - i would if someone asked me and i could. is there no-one that would accept a post dated cheque from you?

i have used provident before and i think you get even less money if you get cash from them and not shop vochers.

i really hope you manage to sort something out.

NineWurlysDancing · 10/12/2007 10:21

we have had loads of loans with provident and are desperatly trying to get them cleared up, we now owe £160. I wish we had never taken any loans with them cos one leads to another which leads to another and then you end up paying out a fortune on stupid amounts of money that you have borrowed.

paddlinglikemad · 10/12/2007 10:21

was going to but she mentioned how tight things were with her..so feel a bit bad about not being able to pay as normal and put her in the position of saying its not okay...oh poo!

what have you decided to do. is everything ok?

Tortington · 12/12/2007 00:46

dont do it. they are rip off bastards.

RGPargy · 12/12/2007 01:03

Provident - been there, done that. Would NEVER do it again. The interest is RIDICULOUS. You'd seriously be much better off without them. They are pure cowboys.

jesuswhatnext · 12/12/2007 12:07

DO NOT TOUCH THE PROVI - TOTAL RIP-OFF

SO SORRY YOU WILL HAVE BLEAK JAN, I WOULD RATHER THAT THOUGH THAN TAKE LOAN FROM PROVI

kittylouise · 12/12/2007 12:12

Horrible situation for you. If you can avoid it, please avoid the provident, thier interest rates (as you know) are exhorbitant. And as a poster says above, I think they give you quite a large value in vouchers, but not necessatily in cash, perhaps you not be able to get enough in this way anyway.

Also think it would be very unfair for you to ask you cm to defer payment until after Christmas; she would probably be depending on recieving this money and to ask her to delay would put hr in an tricky situation.

You say you have cut your card up, however have you told your bank? If you still have a credit card account with them (even if you haven't physically got the card iyswim) can you not ring the bank, say your card is broken, and can they issue you with another one? I know that it's another form of high interest (especially if you draw cash on a credit card) but it would be a damn sight better for you than a provident loan or a cheque cashing place.

paddlinglikemad · 13/12/2007 19:30

well didn't go with Prov or Cheque Shop place...did what KittyLouise suggested and reinstated the cut up Credit Card which arrived this morning and withdrew cash for now.. 3 days late for CM but have paid in full in cash for next 2 weeks ....then him indoors took it to work with him 'to avoid temptation' and left me with a car with just petrol fumes in it had to coast to school and back praying to the 'Petrol Fairy' ( I also turned the radio off to help things..why ????) BTW School too far to walk ..
Hes not back with card til 9pm , he doesn't drive so am faced with prospect of trying to get to nearest petrol station ( about 2.5 miles on rural roads) without running out...looks like am going to have to ring a friend and see if they will go and get a can full for me.....

Have oyu thought about using a credit union? they are alot cheaper than prov

nutcracker · 13/12/2007 20:55

As everyone else said, they are a rip off. I borrowed £1000 18mths ago, paying back £18 a week and I still owe £482. I will have paid back over £1800 by the end.

It got me out of a mess at the time as I owed lots of council tax, but I wish i'd found another way now. Thankfully I only have 6mths until it is paid off.

paddlinglikemad · 15/12/2007 14:22

Yep had a look at Credit Union website there is one near me that I would be eligble to join but I presume you have to save with them for a while until you can borrow? think it might be a good thing for 2008 though....
