Hiya
never had a car on tick always bought outright
Current car had about 7 years and paid £10k cash.. since then done ivf and now only have £5k in saving and just to now having a daughter and for emergencies I would like to keep that cash where it is
Soooooo thinking only way to get a car is on the tick and I only have bmw don’t have many luxury in life but love my cars
So my current is 60 plate and want doming 17plate ish
So looking at £15k
what’s your thoughts on the idea, don’t even know what the money payments would be about or anything
Also I’m sahm on UC so would I be accepted ive got good credit rating and partner works ?

Thanks

What is wrong with your current car @BMWqueen? Is it giving you trouble or do you just fancy a new one?

RagzReturnsRebooted · 16/10/2021 20:12

Assuming this is legitimate (being generous) it may be worth working out how much spare income you have a month that you could spend on car payments, first.

When I was a SAHM in receipt of benefits (with a working partner), I managed with 2nd hand cars that cost less than £1k... Though I was lucky that we had low repair and servicing costs and DH did that himself.

I'd guess at at least £200 a month for a car on finance, but quite possibly more. You could Google it quite easily.

helpthewhos · 16/10/2021 20:32

Don't buy anything on credit unless you have to.

BMWqueen · 16/10/2021 20:47

I’ve had to give my car to my partner so he can get to work, so want another so me and little one can get out and about.. love my cars had them since I was 19 now 37 soon
Thanks

It would be better if your partner bought himself a car and you got your one back.

If you split up in future the car debt will then be in his name, and as he’s working that will be easier than you having debt you can’t pay as your a sahm and unmarried so not as financially secure as you would be if you were.

If you couldn’t pay your debt and got black marks against your credit it would affect your ability to get credit in future. Or even a place to live.

You may like cars but you’re not in a position to be choosy just now until you return to work or get married.

BMWqueen · 16/10/2021 21:23

He gives me all his money every wage for me to sort out and never wants for nothing and just had a daughter via IVF so we are strong and no splitting up in the near future :) we rent off council land have been in this house 18 years and not planning on moving etc
Thanks

What does ‘on tick’ mean?

KeyboardWorriers · 16/10/2021 21:49

I think it means borrowed money @Yogawankonobi ... It's very dated terminology though! Probably largely used by men past their prime these days Wink

BMWqueen · 16/10/2021 21:55

Means car on credit and pay monthly.. is it a big thing or do most people buy outright
All you commenting what do you do car wise is yours on credit ?

Frankly, I would not expect you to achieve a 15k finance on a car if you only have UC as income. Your partner may give you every penny he has but technically it's not your income.

You may want to ask him to get a car and give you yours back when he does.

Hi, can we please ask that you stop the trollhunting? While we can't vouch for anyone, there's nothing in the OP's history that concerns us currently.

arrangeyourface · 16/10/2021 22:33

I think most people are unclear about how you can get another car on finance when you’re not in paid employment.

KeyboardWorriers · 16/10/2021 22:39

"All you commenting what do you do car wise is yours on credit ?"

I bought a tiny and unimpressive (but very reliable) car outright. So did DH. (We earn well over £100k between us) .

clockover · 16/10/2021 22:39

Who is going to finance a £15k car to someone on UC with no job.

BMWqueen · 16/10/2021 22:42

We still bring 2k a month home combined so easy have £200 a month for monthly payments

It doesn't matter. If you finance the car it's your income on the paperwork. You don't work. You claim UC.

JLQ1020 · 16/10/2021 22:45

If you decide to borrow to get a car I would recommend getting a personal loan from a bank or other suitable lender rather than directly from a car finance place. However as you are SAHM some places cannot accept benefits so you might need to take our a joint personal loan. Interest rates will be much lower that way than directly through a car finance company.
Also I've only ever bought a car once outright and it was my 1st car (hello £600 corsa)
Nothing wrong with taking a loan for a car, but remember to think do I really need this, can I afford it, are there better cheaper options available.
I do agree with other posters I woukd want my car back and let him get one only if purely as he as a wage coming in and finance will be easier too get.

BMWqueen · 16/10/2021 22:46

Oh right.. looks like it will have to go in partners name lol x

How do you get UC with an income of 2k a month

Can't you save up and get a car for dp and then you get your BMW back from him?

dementedpixie · 16/10/2021 22:58

@Thekormachameleon

How do you get UC with an income of 2k a month
I'm assuming the £2k is partners wages plus the UC payment
