So apparently I have a CCJ

I'm in the process of applying for a mortgage and the lender has come back stating I have a CCJ of £6k.

I don't know anything about this, but it appears linked to my previous business address which I left in 2011. It's from 2016 and linked to a flat number which didn't exist when I lived there (building has since been converted)

For clarity I have-

  • always been on the electoral roll
  • have lived in my current property for 9 years
  • had the same bank account for 19 years
  • had the same mobile for 15 years
  • have a passport and driving licence in my name and address
  • have passed financial vetting for work

ClearScore and Experian have no record of this, in fact my Experian score is now 999.

What the hell am I supposed to do now? We've put an offer in on our dream house, I'm guessing that's out of the window now even if it's a mistake Sad

Annoying!!! I know it doesn't help now but I think this is why they say to check your credit file before applying for a mortgage/house hunting so that you have the chance fo amend things like this.

I know that you can contact Experian so that a notice of correction can be put on your file. Perhaps you could do this?

Sorry I can't be of more help I'm sure someone better suited will come along but I really hope you manage to sort it out :(

I did check though, there's no trace of it on Equifax, Experian or ClearScore. This has showed up on CallCredit who I've never even heard of.

How on Earth have you passed financial vetting for work with an undeclared CCJ? (that you obviously didn’t know about).

ohfook · 15/10/2021 21:56

Similar happened to us. It went on years without us knowing about it. Only became apparent when we began to look into getting a mortgage.

Basically we told the police who got action fraud to deal with it. It took ages but it was sorted. They didn't particularly care how it happened they said it's so common now that they would only investigate massive amounts; the rest just gets written off.

This site may be of some help. You can also sign up free for 30 days just to check out what is on all the credit checking agencies.

That's a whole other kettle of fish Hmm

Do you have a fairly common name? If you've got the same name as a later resident, it's possible they've linked it by mistake.
Credit Karma is call credit's free credit checker - if you sign up, you'll be able to challenge it fairly easily

This happened to me op and I got it removed.
This was earlier this year. The CCJ only appeared on transunion. It was for a water bill debt from 2016 , at a property that I had left on 2010. The water board had messed up the accounts.

You need to get a copy of your credit file from the agency that has flagged up the CCJ. Get the CCJ reference number and call the county court that logged it. The court will tell you which company / lender has logged the CCJ against you. They can be issued against you in absentia (eg all warnings / letters sent to old address ) and you know nothing about it for years... until you apply for a mortgage.

In my case - I got in touch with the water board and sent them proof that I didn't live at that address. They wrote a letter to the relevant county court stating that it was an error and the CCJ was set aside. I kept my solicitor in the loop but we didn't tell the seller ... we got the CCJ set aside in a matter of weeks.

Water companies are apparently dreadful for issuing CCJs left right and centre, in error.

We didn't lose our house btw. It was very very stressful however.

I'm hoping to be able to speak with the mortgage lady this morning to see where we go from here Sad

Good luck OP

I need to check my credit score/rating/ don't know the difference

But I'm not aware of anything. It's that I hear a lot of odd stories. I was once chased for an allegedly unpaid bill for a flat that didn't exist. So like, if it was 17a and 17b, I got told by a debt recovery service that I had a decade old oustanding utility bill for 17c.

BluebellsGreenbells · 16/10/2021 11:24

I had similar - I was able to prove the date I moved (mortgage shows up on the file) and they removed it.
