Think about getting married too. At the moment you have no call on any pension or income your DP might build up.

You don't need a big party, a simple register office affair with witnesses will do it.

You’re 36, open a LISA asap, your husband too if he’s under 39.

It’s a savings account the government add a hefty chunk to under certain circs, and you can use it to buy a house or for a pension only.

Plus a private pension each. Even if you only put a small amount away it will build up- google sipp. Again you get tax relief added so way better than a normal savings account.

Sorry partner not husband!!

At the minute if you have no private pension you would be entitled to state pension and possibly pension credit to top it up. You would also be able to claim housing benefit and council tax benefit

You are only entitled to state pension if you’ve paid contributions. 35 years are needed for full £9k state pension.

Your wording makes that sound like a state pension is paid if you don’t have a private pension. They are not related. Everyone is entitled to state pension whatever their other provision - how much you get is dependent on your qualifying years of contributions, nothing else. State pension is not means tested.

@shazzz1xx
I'm quite sure a lot of people are in this situation themselves you are not on your own.
It might be worth looking at some training options at your local college so that more job opportunities become available to you. Also look at your current skills and build on them.
If you could get a job say at your local hospital - you say you've worked in a cafe, most have staff restaurants and all have kitchens to cook food for the patients then that's a transferable skill and the nhs pension is one of the better ones. Other good schemes are the police, prison service, teachers and civil service
Smaller private companies tend to only offer the bare minimum of schemes which aren't as good.

It's also great your aiming to buy your house that would be really positive 😊

@Cocomarine yeah it does sound like that when I read it back. Everyone can get state pension if they have sufficient ni contributions
