Electricity supply

I have been clobbered by the failing energy companies and OfGem has allocated me to EDF. This happened weeks ago and, apart from a brief email to tell me that I am with them I have heard nothing from EDF. I have tried ringing them and just get a message saying they are dealing with these customers and will be in touch with a contract soon.

That is all very well - I am getting supply - but I have absolutely no idea what I am paying for it; and presumably when that info does arrive I will have no choice but to pay it, however high it might be.

I have been given no information about what to do if I do not want EDF - I cannot change companies till I get the EDF contract apparently and I do not know how long I might then have to change.

I also have credit of £120+ which I am assured is protected, but do not know "where" it is at present.

Anyone else in this boat, or have experience of EDF?

You'll be on a tariff that is in line with the price cap. This is fixed for the next 6 months.

There's no point changing as there's nothing cheaper available. Any fixes are hundreds of pounds a year more expensive.

Just need to sit tight and see how it all plays out over the coming months. I was with Avro and am in the same boat, being moved to Octopus.

I'm just waiting and leaving them to it, they'll get it sorted in time, they can't tell us anything new and it won't help them set people up with them if they have people pestering them for information that isn't yet available.

the price cap is approx 1300£ for the year for a medium usage home - obviously if you use more then your bill can go above this - but the price per unit is capped

do you know how much gas and electric you use?
do you keep a check on your meter usage?

I’m in the same position. Moved to edf when my supplier went bust.

I checked martins money tips for info and it advised to stay put as I couldn’t move again without the required details. I did a meter reading and submitted it on the bust company’s portal. I’d advise you to do the same if you haven’t already done so.

Edf emailed me an automated message to say they are supplying me and my details would be through soon. Presumably they have thousands of new customers being punted into them. I await their further info. I still have no account number or anything.

Meanwhile, as I’d signed up to martins money tips, their automated system emailed me to say they know I’m with edf and that they are roughly the same price as all the others as the cheap deals are all gone now. So they suggested staying put.

I’m just putting by 20% extra each month so when they do contact me I can transfer it over to them so I don’t end up in debt. Prices have apparently gone up that much.

I have a similar credit to you OP and it gets kept aside for us. We won’t lose it.

It just feels discombobulating that we have to sit and do nothing.

I’m still annoyed that I lost out on the opportunity to switch to a cheaper provider because we weren’t allowed. Through no fault of our own. So we get financially penalised because a company went bust. How’s that right.

It is very frustrating isn't it? But it seems there is nothing we can do.

I remember when we used to pay the Midlands Electricity Board and that was that - and the government had the price fixed so they could not overcharge.

But - hey ho - political doctrine demands competition, and we are all in a mess. It is the elderly and disadvantaged who have problems chopping and changing who lose out in this mad doctrine-driven situation. And companies offering to change your supplier regularly are cashing in - and where does their income come from? - backhanders from the utility companies which are passed on to us as higher bills.
