aargh - submitted tax credits renewal late, now they want £1.8K back :-(

Our tax credits renewal was due in the summer - unfortunately my mum's cancer came back at the same time, her health deteriorated extremely rapidly all of a sudden and as well as having to go back and forth to Germany I was in a real state emotionally. I went to see my GP at the time because I felt like I was just going to pieces, and he referred me for urgent counselling.
Anyway, I did get behind with some paperwork at the time (not bloody surprising really ) including the sodding tax return renewal form. I have done it since and everything is fine now re. the current award, but they still want £1.8K back from the old award because the form was submitted late .
I explained the situation to them over the phone and they have told me that I can contest the payment demand - has anyone done this? What are my chances? I can't believe this is happening now, it's nearly Christmas, it's my mum's funeral on Monday, FFS, the last thing I need is this

sorry to hear this, I don't know anything about Tax Credits, but perhaps CAB could help you?

Sorry for the loss of your mum

GeekgirlRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 07/12/2007 15:49

yes, CAB is a good idea, thanks. Hadn't thought of that.

oh no gg, last thing you need. we got overpaid too so aren't getting anything much this year. but haven't submitted final figures as dh doesn't do his tax return for 06/07 till december. so they are working on figs from 2005 which doesn't seem to cause them any problem (apart from not giving us any money!) i rang a few weeks ago and they said no problem we will sort it all out when the final figs are available.

sorry not very clear but my point is if they are happy for us to submit self employed info so much delayed then they should accept your late return. i am hoping that when he finally gets around to doing the tax return we'll get a refund. sure i've seen threads where people have successfully appealed too - they don't seem to have rigid systems.

Ask them for an appeal form, wait for it to arrive, fill it in and send it back.
