Do you regularly give to charity?

And if so, which charity(s) do you support?

When I had my dd I gave a small amount regularly to a children’s charity. I have kind of got out of the habit of it and feel I probably should?

Action Aid
Local hospice
English Symphony Orchestra
Crisis (each Christmas|)
Parkinsons UK

maofteens · 29/09/2021 22:12

Yes I have two direct debits, one to Shelter, one to Red Cross. I also donate to charity shops regularly, sponsor friends - most recently a friends daughter who walked 45km in one day for a hospice a couple weeks ago.

StillSmallVoice · 29/09/2021 22:14

Yes. I have a standing order to my church and a couple of other causes I care about.

If there is a charity whose work you care about the single most effective way you can help them is to set up a standing order or direct debit. That means they know what their income will be and can budget, and you don't need to think about remembering when prompted.

PermanentTemporary · 29/09/2021 22:14

Don't feel guilty. A lot of charities are quite questionable. I've never felt more depressed than when setting up a direct debit to Trussell Trust, to feed hungry people in one of the richest countries in the world Sad

If you're managing to be kind and generous to the people around you, that probably dies far more than my few quid and grumpy face.

LubaLuca · 29/09/2021 22:14

Yes, I have a few small direct debits to a handful of charities including British Red Cross and RNLI.

If I didn't have DDs set up, I probably wouldn't give anything. I don't carry cash, and in the last couple of years I haven't been to any charity events.

MondeoFan · 29/09/2021 22:15

Used to give to RSPB for around 8 years. Now give to Headway as it's a charity that's very close to home. I also think RNLI and Air Ambulance are worthy charities. I read somewhere that Air Ambulance don't get any other funding apart from donations.

MrsCremuel · 29/09/2021 22:16

Yep, DDs the Dementia UK and Refuge. I also volunteer weekly, or did until a couple of weeks ago.

Libertaire · 29/09/2021 22:17

I support my local Air Ambulance by a monthly direct debit. DP does some volunteering for them in a technical role. They are an outstanding group of highly skilled people who deserve my support.

QuestionEverythingBaby · 29/09/2021 22:19

Yep, direct debit to local wildlife hospital.

Kite22 · 29/09/2021 22:19

Yes, I have 6 standing orders / direct debits, across a range of different charities. Just small amounts, but regular income they can budget for.

I wish more people would - charities are happy to accept small amounts, and like the fact it is regular and means they can budget. I know there will be the odd family that struggle to get to the end of the month (which is why one of mine is for the Trussell Trust), but most families could probably afford ÂŁ5 a month (+ if you can gift aid, then it adds money on top of your donation, to be received by the charity of your choice).

xyzandabc · 29/09/2021 22:19

Money no, time yes.

A couple of different charities, only one at a time but I've probably averaged a couple of hours a week for the last 25 years or so.

lljkk · 29/09/2021 22:19

Monthly Direct debits to MSF ÂŁ20, WaterAid ÂŁ5
ÂŁ100 each year to Trussell Trust.

In lieu of gift to my step-mum, ex-teacher (she doesn't want or need a thing) I sometimes donate lump large sums to education charities.

Ragwort · 29/09/2021 22:20

Yes - a number of different ones, overseas aid, one for the elderly, local church, various local projects, Salvation Army ... others on an ad hoc basis. I also give my time to various organisations.

Almaisnormal · 29/09/2021 22:20

Yes. Woodland trust. Rspb and local hospice

SleepingStandingUp · 29/09/2021 22:21

DD set up for BHF for ÂŁ10 a month. Used to be NSPCC but I swapped a few years ago.

Regularly shop at charity shop for local children's hospice (we use the hospice ourselves) and others.

And hoc sponsorships

PinkFootstool · 29/09/2021 22:23

Monthly to:
WaterAid
SSAFA lottery
My old university hardship fund - that helped me with emergency dental funds when I needed it as a student

olidora63 · 29/09/2021 22:24

Kent and Sussex Air Ambulance
Folly wild animal charity
Jack Russell Terrier association
All monthly direct debits.

Benjispruce4 · 29/09/2021 22:26

A monthly direct debit to cancer research and the air ambulance.
Always donate things in decent condition to charity shops too.

PumpkinsNPoppycock · 29/09/2021 22:28

Not regular donations, no. I donate to groups collecting clothes/ furniture / toys etc for domestic violence victims and recently Afghan families. I bought a trolley of food for the food bank at the start of the school hols, Easter eggs at Easter for them (they had requested them for the dc) etc

I cashed in a ÂŁ5 win on a scratch card today n gave it to the woman selling the big issue outside the shop.

But I don't donate money regularly. I like to help my community in other ways I guess

allsorts1 · 29/09/2021 22:41

Yes regular donations to local shelter & sea shepherds as well as usually always donate to friends fundraisers and every fundraiser for our work charity. The local shelter donation particularly helps me feel less guilty about not donating to individual homeless in the area as never have cash on me.

in2dagroove · 29/09/2021 22:43

Monthly DDs to road victims trust, local hospices, mencap, homeless charity & cancer research

KohlaParasanda · 29/09/2021 22:43

Yes, a monthly DD to Refuge and to Women's Aid (I would like to offer practical help but am time-poor and at the moment it makes more sense to give money) and random donations to causes that catch my imagination or tug my heartstrings. I'm currently trying to choose a charity that supports women's education or reproductive health overseas to support regularly. I don't miss the money I donate, but there's no way I'd donate as much if I didn't have the DDs set up.

MrsLeclerc · 29/09/2021 22:44

I donated to a cancer charity monthly for years. Only a few pounds as that was all we could afford. Then I started getting endless calls and letters to get me to up the donation. It got draining and I just cancelled in the end.

We’ve done the one off gifts for oxfam etc since.

allsorts1 · 29/09/2021 22:44

I also try to buy the big issue from legitimate sellers whenever I can/have cash. Wish they all had card machines. Must have been a hard year for them without commuters.

CheshireSplat · 29/09/2021 22:47

I'm lucky to be comfortably off, so I give 5% of my take home pay to charity. I spread it between about 8 causes, some very local, some international and have about ÂŁ20 left a month to sponsor people. I review them every couple of years, I love choosing who to give to makes me feel like I'm in a sweet shop.
