NI in retirement

Hi.

If I retire at age 64, to live on my workplace pension, will I still have to pay National Insurance?

Am in Scotland, if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

Without knowing your date of birth that is hard to know. Once you reach State Pension Age then you don't pay NI on earned income from employment (Class 1 NI).

If your only source of income is a workplace pension, then you would not pay NI as you do not pay NI on pension withdrawals.

I'm 64. Born January 1957.

I won't be working.

Will I pay NI on my work pension?

You need to get your NI record from Gov website- you will need to register first -
and they will forecast your pension and any years you may need to make up for a full pension.
You don't have to pay but may get less state pension .

No, not on your pension.

If you have other earned e you will have to pay NI on that income (not on your pension), but only until you are 66 (your state pension age).

wobbleinprogress · 27/09/2021 20:21

No, you only currently pay ni as an employee or if you are self employed. Check if you have enough contributions for a full state pension

DH and I are 60 and 63, both retired on workplace pensions, we pay tax but no NI on this.

campion · 27/09/2021 20:22

You don't pay NI on workplace pensions

kitkat6 · 27/09/2021 20:38

NI on earned income only until state retirement date.

Pensions and dividends are excluded for NI

Triphazards · 27/09/2021 20:41

Thanks. It wasn't clear to me on the .Gov site.

I have 46 full years' stamp.

I think that the rules are being changed so that anyone - even over retirement age - will have to pay NI on EARNED income.

There will be no NI on pension income.

All part of getting the economy back to a healthier state after supporting people through Covid.

Your state pension age (SPA) is currently age 66. If you have a Jan-5th April Birthday, I think you pay NI until 5th April that year you turn 66.

No NI on pension. Would only be on income from employment, or self employment.

The situation can change between now and then. Though you are getting quite close so reasonable to base expectations on the current SPA.
