Change of job.. less money but happier?

Hello guys. Im a nurse and have worked in an elderly ward unit for 2 years since I qualified. 34.5 hrs a week. I have accepted a job in an ophthalmology department in outpatients for 30hrs a week. This is mon-fri. No nightshifts etc. It’s a drop in pay of about £500 per month which is a little worry but I’m completely and utterly miserable on the wards so hoping it will be better. Thoughts?

That sounds like a really fab move. Daytime only jobs are hard to get in nursing - enjoy. You could always do the occasional shift on the bank to keep your hand in with more acute stuff and make up a bit of the financial short fall.

Sounds like a good move to me.
Loads of vaccinator shifts available at present, so easy to make up your money.

Do it. Life is way too short to not enjoy your work.

Well it depends if you will be earning enough on the lower salary, but you'll have options like vaccinator shifts or bank work if you need it, so it sounds like its worth a try.

I think it's super brave taking a role with a lower pay in the current climate, however job satisfaction is so important and should be one of the most important factors in an job.

Over on the work section I was following a thread about people taking a pay cut and I was amazed how many highly professional people were taking huge pay cuts and ending up so much happier. Literally halving their salaries but never regretted it.

I hope it works out for you and gives you a happier balance

Didn't want to read and run. But ^^^this 100%

We spend too much time at work as it is, it's important you enjoy what/where you are Smile

how much for an agency shift once a month if you want to top your money up?

less money and happiness is far better

WombatChocolate · 22/09/2021 18:13

If you can afford to live on £500 a month less, then it’s fine. A few cutbacks are usually easily achieved. It depends on how much surplus you had at the end of each month previously.

Loads of people shift to part time and have less money but a happier life. If you can afford it, do it. If it will leave you massively strapped for cash, I wouldn’t.

how lovely for you to have your weekends back

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/09/2021 18:16

you could do the odd bank shift on the wards for a bit of extra too

PermanentTemporary · 22/09/2021 19:02

Sounds like a good move, really hope you enjoy it. Nothing is ever wasted, you'll probably find your acute experience stans you in really good stead in the future.
