Help with rent!

So does anyone in here know what help you can get with rent when you get a council house? I'm bidding on a place and I'm 3rd at the moment but it's £700 a month. I will be earning around £900 a month next month when I start my new job so I'm just wondering what help I could get if I live alone? Otherwise I'll pull out my bid incase I get offered it and can't afford it. Tia x

Universal credit?
Don't pull out of a council house if you are offered one!!

Charliechoosecarefully · 16/09/2021 18:43

I'd imagine you'd be eligible for UC - check the calculators online.

You'll get 25% off your council tax for a start. Just tell them that you live alone when you register. Some councils will let you pay over 12 months rather than the usual 10 months.
It might even be worthwhile going on to a water meter if it's not currently metered.

If you are offered it they will do an affordablility check for you and say if you are entitled to any benefits to help. You can also do a check on what you are entitled to by going on turn2us and entering your details as if you have the property so that you can see what your financial situation will be.

Go to the entitled2 website and do a bene for check it will tell you what you will get.

You will get Universal credit. They will normally pay full rent element for social housing unless you have more bedrooms than you need in the house.

@Babyroobs

You will get Universal credit. They will normally pay full rent element for social housing unless you have more bedrooms than you need in the house.
So on Universal credit you would have a standard single element and a rent element added together then earnings would reduce your total UC allowance. If you have children then you will also get child elment(s ) and also get a work allowance meaning the first £293 of earnings is disregarded before deductions take place. If you have no children then each pound you earn reduces your total UC by 63p.

Thank you everyone ! I'll be claiming as living alone and have no kids so just wanted to make sure I'd get help, I've checked the calculator and it says I'll get £89 a week which would be doable I think! Thanks everyone x
