Counsellor earns

I’m a counsellor (marriage and individual) 10 years experience not a psychologist.
What would I earn an hour? Is online counselling big in the UK?

In the West Midlands they charge about £80 an hour but these are usually people who went to university for their qualifications and then worked in that field the whole of their professional lives.

However, the market is also inundated with counsellors who all seem to be women in their 40s and 50s who have got a divorce and retrained as counsellors because their friends have told them they're good listeners. These ones charge about half as much .

CBT type counsellors are always in demand. What type are you ?

Oh that is so true @ThisIsStartingToBoreMe about the middle aged good listeners 😂

@LesleyA wouldn’t a search of online counsellors in the UK via Google yield more data for you?

There are a huge number of counsellors in the UK. I don't think they all earn a good living.

Morning! Aforementioned middle aged counsellor here. Not divorced (yet). Didn’t do this because I was told I was a good listener either. Listening is a vital skill but only part of the job. As to earnings: they vary hugely depending on where you are and your likely work opportunities. People in private practice charge somewhere between £40 and £55 an hour but the overheads are considerable and include professional membership, supervision, insurance and room rental. Employment is usually within IAPT services or other agencies and not fantastically well paid. You need to do any job like this because you love it, not because you are looking to make lots of money.
