Tax return for child benefit

Not had to do this before, but from April 2020 to April 2021 DHs salary will be above the minimum allowed for child benefit. I have looked and it looks like the end of October is when he needs to complete the online tax return form. Could anyone confirm this please? We can call them but just wondered if any experts on here to advise before I hold on the phone for a long while. Thanks in advance.

He needs to register by 5th October
Submitting tax return depends on whether its done by paper or online

Looks like he has until the end of January 2022 for an online return. End of October 2021 for a paper return

Thank you. I have only just seen the registering date. I appreciate that

Don't leave it until the last minute because the initial set up can be time consuming, they have to send something in the post.

But once it's set up, it's a very quick and easy job, they ask you which sections you need complete and then only show you that section.

Plus if he's been on PAYE, they should already have details of his earnings and pension contributions for the relevant year, plus any P11D benefits.

Thank you. He’s a normal ‘employee’ so hopefully as he has his P60 it should be okay. He will look next week to get it set up

He also has to declare interest and dividends so you need to start hunting out the details for those too which can also be time consuming to try to find it.

Karwomannghia · 27/08/2021 08:34

And fill in the child benefit part obviously! You pay it back in percentages for how much over he went so may not have to pay the whole lot back.

Shelby10 · 29/08/2021 08:50

Thanks everyone. I’m not sure about the interest and dividends bit. He just get a salary that has gone above the threshold.
But he will complete what he can and call them if needed.

Have you taken off pension contributions? As paying back CB is based on salary net of pension contributions

LadyDanburysCane · 30/08/2021 12:07

Once you’ve got over the initial registration part the actual online completion each year is quick and easy.

It takes me less than half an hour to do DHs each year. I put in his P60 amounts, his pension contributions, the amount of CB received, any gift aid contributions (we do most of our by standing order). No dividends and all savings are in my name so no interest for DH to declare.

Our CB actually stopped in 2019 so this year should be our last return.

Thanks everyone. I will make sure we look at everything you have said.
Appreciate it

If you want repayments coming out of his salary next year then I think the form has to be completed by 31/12/21. Leaving it to the end of January will mean any overpayment has to be returned in one go.
