Anyone had experience of this. Credit card company say I am not liable and they have cancelled my cards but it has kind of freaked me out a bit.

It happens, even when you think you've been incredibly careful. Do you know where they might have got your details from? Apparently the most common place to have your card details stolen are petrol stations, but anywhere that someone else handles your card is suspect.

It'll be fine, it's just a pain for a bit while your cc company organise to have a new card sent out. They will probably also want to go over every item the card was used for in the last few days so they can determine what transactions are yours and what ones are fraudulent.

Yeah they have done this. The thing is the card was only used online twice. Once to book a very repulatble hotel and the other to buy golf clubs for my dh. I am just panicking about what else they know about me.

Apparently it's not that common for cc details to be stolen through online usage, unless you have some spyware on your computer. Perhaps you could run virus/spy check. It's more likely that your details were skimmed by someone actually handling your card, eg in a shop or restaurant.

Card details tend to be copied in petrol stations down South and more than likely over a year ago.

Yes - whenever your card goes out of view, it could be copied. the petrol stations thing was abig scam earlier this year, which involved dodgy chip and pin terminals - so in that case there was a problem even with the card in full view all the time. Plus it has been known for online businesses which store card details to be hacked.

This happened to dh the week before our wedding, he reckons it got copied at a petrol station he used. The cheeky sods booked themselves some easyjet flights and gave themselves a pressie of a few hundred pounds worth of euros.
The bank sorted it out very quickly, didn't inconvenience us in any way. Bran is right, it's safer to shop online than to use your card in a restaurant where they take it out of your site to take your payment.

my card was once copied through a single use online....Amazon . I know this as it was the first and only time the card was used. Amazon denied it was their site, but it was; db is a bit of a geek and checked my pc for spyware and it was clear.

Hasten to add this was several years ago, and have used Amazon many many times since, and not had a problem.

SenoraPostrophe · 30/11/2007 21:23

tissy: it could have been luck: some fraudsters simply run algorhythms to generate card numbers and keep trying them until they get one that works. until recently, not all shops checked the expiry date was the real one.
