Wage slip issue

Hello wise mumsnetters!
I've had to name change for this for potentially outing details.
I've got an issue with my wages and I'm trying to rectify it before payday at the end of the month and I wondered if anyone can help me with what to say, how to handle it etc.
I've returned to work after mat leave 14th July. The business manager did not notify anyone of my return to work and so my July wage slip showed £0. I did expect 2 weeks pay for 2 weeks work and so when I brough this up, I was told an emerency payment would be made on payday (last working day of the month). They said they couldn't provide a wage slip of the updated earnings but I roughly recieved what I calculated it to be. I have no idea if any money taken for tax, NI, pension or student loan though.
I did recieve the payment on payday. Phew! Or so I thought but now checking this months wage slip they have processed 2 payments. One is August months pay and the other is the July payment. From this wage slip I am able to see that in July they made deductions of £168 (so I guess that's tax, NI etc) It's not broken down in ayway, that's just what I have been able to surmise from the July payment and the extra payment in the wages.
Here comes the bit that is bothering me! Becuase they have processed this extra payment, they also deducted that July payment which I understand but that extra payment made my gross income for August, roughly, £2000 more than what it should have been (even though that payment is showing in the deductions!) This means that my NI, student loan and pension has deducted about £350 more than what it should have and I am about £50 down from a "normal" wage month.
Interestingly it hasn't factored in any tax deductions (although when I returned form mat leave last time, I didn't pay tax at first then, either).
When I had a problem in July, payroll weren't that helpful and were reluctant to make an emergency payment. I don't know how I handle going about getting these deductions sorted? I also don't know how I could have £168 worth of July deductions fact in either.
If anyone has any wise adice, I would be really grateful. I have got in touch with payroll but its a 5 working day turn around for any replies.
I really hope what I've written makes sense. Happy to clarify if needed!

So basically your tax etc for aug has included your July pay?
I'm not 100% but look on HMRC, may be able to claim it back after the tax year.
But ideally you need wait to speak to payroll as they'll know what's happened and seems an error on their behalf.

@TwinkleTwinkle11 Thank you for taking the time to reply.
The more I look at it the less I can make sense of it so, you are right, I will wait (5 working days!) to speak to payroll.
I wasn't taxed at all for august, wage slip is available to view now but wages don't go in until 31st.
I had deductions of £168 in July (of what I don't know becuase they won't update my wage slip.)
Then deductions of £2000. £1200 which was the July emergency payment and then £800 on just NI, student loan and pension, I wasn't taxed. The deductions take my wages down to about £50 less than what I normally get. In a normal month I usually pay around £500 in deductions including tax.

If you end up overpaying any tax it will resolve due to HMRCs realtime updating.
I didn’t pay any tax for 2 months when I went back to work after maternity.
Best bet- log into your hmrc account and you can see the info logged on there. Then get someone from payroll to break it down for you
