Student contents insurance in halls of residence

Was wondering if anyone could recommend a particular company and give me a rough indication of cost. Not covered currently on our house contents but I just wanted to see what others may have paid before I start doing my donkey work. TIA

Have you checked that some form of contents insurance isn't included with the halls accommodation? Although I think it only covers for items left in rooms not when they are out.

You should be able to add a student on to your home insurance for a small premium

Ours actually covered for university owned accommodation in his 1st year. He got out and about (travel to home/halls/campus etc) and I just had to add on high value items i.e., laptop, phone, cameras etc.

His 2nd/3rd year private rental included contents insurance but not a huge amount so took out a policy in his name for approx £16 per month. We used a company called Home Protect but there are a lot of insurers, including Direct Line etc who now offer student insurance. Many people will advise Endsleigh - I found them expensive.

Thanks, she has checked and the halls do include contents insurance. Endsleigh was the standard insurer when I was a student a million years ago!

I've just had a quote from Urban Jungle which is very reasonable. Not specifically for students though.

It's definitely worth looking at getting a home policy that includes student insurance when you renew. When mine moved into shared houses in the 2nd year, it was so much cheaper to have them on our policy than the shared house taking out their own policy or each student having their own personal policy.

It was also cheaper to use specialist insurance for high risk items rather than adding it to our policy, plus the policies were much more comprehensive without ridiculous exclusions eg mine insure their musical instruments through the Musician's Union.
