Car insurance etc for new driver aged 18

Hi,
My son has his driving test next month.
Hopefully he'll pass 🙏
He is off to university at end of September.
My current plan is to sell him my car (4 years old, very cheap to insure etc) at a good discount ☺
What is the best way to do this? Transfer the car registration to him and get multi car insurance?
Or do I keep the car in my name?
I'm hoping to get an electric car ☺

If he owns the car, he should be the registered keeper. And then needs insurance. It's going to be sky high!

Have you run his details and the cars details through a price comparison site?

Artdecolover · 14/08/2021 19:57

Not yet...😬

The car is in the top 10 of cheapest cars for new drivers to insure but it'll still be £500 at least...

You sure he even needs a car at uni? My D is at Exeter and does not want the car. Parking is horrendous and she can't afford to run it. I'd trade yours in for your new electric car instead and have him on your insurance in the holidays.

Artdecolover · 14/08/2021 20:05

Apparently he wants to...parking needs to be sussed out

He has the money so that's not an issue but running costs mount up..

I think £500 is very optimistic for the insurance.

Most new young drivers are lucky to get insurance for £1500, even with a black box, which cause plenty of problems in themselves.

Ginisatonic · 14/08/2021 20:08

Definitely transfer ownership to your son so he is the registered owner and keeper.
When you get an insurance quote add yourself and another responsible adult if there is one. It will make the insurance much cheaper.

Artdecolover · 14/08/2021 20:12

I've just done a process comparison and the lowest was £595

Hmm.
Maybe multi vehicle is the way...

Did you do the quote with him having a provisional licence or a full licence?
pinkmoon18 · 14/08/2021 20:22

That's very cheap for a new driver.

He would need to be on the V5.

You can put yourself down as named driver to help the cost.

My first insurance was £1300.

Artdecolover · 14/08/2021 20:25

Full

What car do you have?
Being only 4 years old and a new driver for that price just doesn't make sense

Blueskythinking123 · 14/08/2021 20:26

I'm surprised at that insurance quote. I gamer heard of anyone getting below £1000 in the first year. We were delighted with a quote of £700 for the second year.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 14/08/2021 20:27

How is it that cheap? The lowest we found for DD fully comp was £1400 on a tiny Aygo! She is on mine now...

Artdecolover · 14/08/2021 20:29

Vauxhall viva 1 ltr

Is £595 as a new driver or a provisional holder as he is now? That's ridiculously cheap for a new young driver.

billiebeeme · 14/08/2021 20:33

I really doubt that will actually be the price. Have you actually clicked the link and rechecked all the details sometimes it then changes price (usually up the way 🙄) I don't think mine was even that low after 1 years no claims!

When I was 18 my insurance was £1300 for a 10 month policy (u got a yrs no claims at the end) and that was 17 years ago, going through price comparisons. It included my mum as named driver otherwise it was £2K+

You don’t need to transfer ownership, the car can belong to anyone however for insurance he needs to be put down as the main driver if he will use it the most and you would be down as a named driver, the only issue with not transferring ownership would be in the event of speeding, parking tickets as they’ll come to you first

spongedod · 14/08/2021 20:34

Sorry missed that you had already answered

What's the insurer?

Going for the cheapest option isn't always the best, you need to make sure he has adequate cover and no huge excess etc.

He is buying the car. So ownership will be his.

pinkmoon18 · 14/08/2021 20:37

Just done a quick quote, I got £1345.

I would double check what info you've put in as obv if any is wrong his policy can be void.

Some insurers won’t cover someone as the main driver if they are not the owner and registered keeper. Anyway he’s buying it so it will be his.

You don’t know the OPs address for a start so not sure how you could get a quote.
pinkmoon18 · 14/08/2021 20:43

@Ginisatonic Obv I don't know her address, of course it depends on where you live etc but I doubt it's going to jump £700 for an address.
