what would you choose to do?
Mortgage paid off so no need to use it for that.

Depends when you will need access to it. I'd put it in a stocks and shares ISA - I've got one with nutmeg and £20k invested in 4/18 has grown to £24,800. I had to hold my nerve as in 3/20 it went down to £17,300 but I'd asked for a 10-year plan as I knew I wouldn't need to access it before then. If you're risk averse then put it in PB as you might win a biggie.

Hi folks! Just asked my first question so am trying to help out too - not financial advice naturally!

If you are using a robo adviser app like Plum have you considered directly investing in the funds that are ‘white labelled’. For instance most of Plum’s funds are Vanguard funds and if you’re competent enough, then investing directly and cutting out the middle man fees is one option, details of who Plum uses below, not sure on Nutmeg www.google.co.uk/amp/s/blog.withplum.com/investment-fund-performance/amp/

Ensure an emergency fund is available. Several months I think

Investment after that could be an index fund Stocks and Shares ISA. Preferably invested throughout the world. I invest in Vanguard Global All Cap index for me and my family but you might not like a fund which is less than 5% UK while having 50+% in USA. I do that because the large UK companies are a pretty mediocre bunch and investment returns have echoed that

But don’t do this if you aren’t prepared to leave it for at least 5-10 years

Also does your pension need boosting?

In hindsight you should have put it into bitcoin two weeks ago.

But thats in hindsight. Not financial advice! Its essentially gambling.

Maybe chuck £500 in for the ride.

If you are going to put money into bitcoin, please learn first how to secure it. Bitcoin is legit, its not gambling, but it is very volatile and there are a lot of scams around.
  • Andreas Antonoplolis on youtube is a great source to learn
  • Coinbase is a great place for small amounts.
  • If you hold any more than about £500 get yourself a hardware wallet such as Trezor or Ledger.

Thanks Cailleachian

I think we have been on crypto threads before.

I do dabble, and use the word gambling lightly. I think with my level of knowledge quite an apt description Grin

I swing trade with around 5k on the exchanges.

I want to get into DCA long term storing but always loose my passwords so a bit nervous.

Also like to be on the exchange to jump ship if required.

I know thats not how to play the crypto game but unfortunately late to the party so to invest large amounts at this price band and lock it away is not something I feel comfortable with atm.

In hindsight should have bit the bullet and done that a month ago though!!!

Cailleachian · 22/08/2021 01:38

@LemonSwan ahaha - yes, I think we have. Sorry I didnt recognise you.

Keeping crypto on an exchange is a risk. The exchange can be hacked, there can be a rugpull or regulatory changes may mean that you cannot access the crypto that they acknowledge you hold.

There is so much more you can do with a self-custodied wallet than just trade. Once you have your crypto under your own control, that's when the magic begins. If its trading that floats your boat (I am a horrible trader, so I dont!) there are exchanges that you can use from a self-custodied wallet (see sovryn for btc, uniswap for ethereum etc)

With £5k, I would defo get a hardware wallet. I prefer ledger to trezor, but both are good. You can connect to metamask on eth and liquality on btc from the hardware wallet

(sorry to hijack your thread @animalcrossingfan2021, maybe its time we started another cryptofocused one)
