Wasn't sure where to post this. How long after sale of a house where the proceeds are to be divided up as the will, would you normally expect to receive the money? Is two months since completion a long time?

My DF didn’t have a will, probate took just under three weeks (last Christmas), I sold his property 2 weeks later and divided the value minus funeral expenses and settling utility bills between myself and my sibling that day.

Thanks all,
A lot of questions, i'll try to answer but it all does confuse me.
Executor is solicitor. House was completed two months ago. Final bills were in weeks ago. Forms have been signed highlighting amounts and all charges etc and account details given. I have no idea what is holding it up now, solicitor is vague or just doesn't reply for weeks.

All sounds pretty normal to me. I’ve been waiting months for our solicitor to wrap up an estate where I’ve prepared all the figures

I’ve done 2 probates myself but this one had IHT complexities

You just need to keep nagging them

One bill that catches people out and often comes in late is tax and social care. Even after probate is granted the revenue often come back to the executors. For my mum it was 6 months after probate had been granted.and cause lots of problems.

The longer it takes the more Solicitors can bill...or did you agree a fixed fee?

PlanDeRaccordement · 13/08/2021 16:56

Might be a tax return and taxes to be paid too before any funds can be distributed.

When my mother died my sister and I asked the solicitors to make an intitial disbursement out of funds that were in the bank. They did so. It was another 5 months before the house was sold and the estate finalised.

NinaBallerinaShoes · 13/08/2021 17:42

I hope the solicitors agreed a fixed fee or their bill could be thousands of pounds. bitter experience

My recollection.
Specific legacies should be paid out within 6 months.
Residual beneficiaries, no limit!

If it's a solicitor dealing with it they are presumably taking the executor's year.
