Electricity - no standing charges

Seventimesaday · 01/08/2021 13:57

I only use electricity ( not a house) from October to March, an hour in the mornings and perhaps 2/3 in the evenings.

I used to be able to get a tariff with zero daily charges, but I paid more per unit. The company went bump and I was moved to a new company on the same tariff. That contract is ending soon, and although GOOGLE suggests there are companies out there still doing this tariff, I can’t actually do any on line quotes.
Can anyone recommend a company for me? I have emailed a couple
but had no reply.

I would go on Moneysavingexpert and just put in your usage paying by direct debit

The standing charge is actually irrelevant

BarbaraofSeville · 01/08/2021 20:03

Standing charges aren't irrelevant if your use is very very low, because it still works out at a few pounds a month even when you don't use any electricity.

I think it could be that no standing charge tariffs don't actually exist any more because it is felt that all users should contribute to the infrastructure, no matter how much they use. But the ops usage will make it hard to do an accurate comparison.

OP does this property need an electricity supply at the times you aren't using the property? Would it be possible to go on a standard tariff so no contract and only have a supply between October and march and then cancel the supply after then, tell them that the property is effectively empty?

Otherwise, you probably want whichever contract offers the lowest standard charge as your bill will be minimal above that.

Utilita have no standing charge. I'm with them and had no issues

Seventimesaday · 02/08/2021 16:52

Yes, the property does need a power supply year round. There may be the odd use in Summer, but used mainly for lights in Winter.

Standing Charges makes a BIG difference to the monthly charge.

@Soberfutures, thank you, I will call them tomorrow.

Anyone know of a no standing charge company that can offer this to a property without a smart meter? Until my mother moves back to the UK, we use her cottage intermittently. There's no phone line and little mobile signal so a smart meter won't work ...

It got thrown onto a tariff with standing charges a few years ago when tariffs were required to be "simplified" - the standing charges alone were similar to typical usage charges without them, but I didn't manage to find a better option at the time. Really must look around again.

Seventimesaday · 03/08/2021 15:07

@Soberfutures. Thank you so much for the recommendation. Signed up with Utilita saving around £80 per year.

@Pythonesque. I have had to agree to having a Smart Meter fitted. Most of the low cost energy suppliers insist on them anyway.

It won’t be my problem if their Smart Meter can’t get a signal, I can read and send manual readings as I do now.

Yes u can add any meter readings on their app also.
Glad I helped.

Soberfutures · 03/08/2021 15:28

@Pythonesque unfortunately I think most places insist on a smart meter you could explain the reasons to them and have them install one and if it doesn't get a good signal just do reading yourself.

lillylemons · 03/08/2021 15:42

utilita only charges for what you use. I've been with them for a few years now.

Window1 · 02/10/2021 07:11

Would the people with utilita recommended them?

Are you on pre pay meter or bills?

Does it make much difference?
