Paying/organising bills in shared accommodation

Hi, just looking for a little guidance.

DD has just moved into a flat share. All the usual bills need to be paid. She is probably the lowest earner in the flat.

Does anyone know the easiest way to organise the paying of bills/saving account etc etc.,

All the usual, water, electricity, gas and also council tax.

All help gratefully received. Thank you

I always split everything equally in my flatshare days. She'll likely be using the same electricity etc as anyone else. We used to put everything into one account on payday (usually mine) and all the direct debits would come from there.

Ok, yes, that’s a good idea. And then if there was anything leftover after your years rental, did you just divide the leftovers?

She will probably only be there for a year

Surely there shouldn't be anything left over? its not usually done like a relationship where you each put in X amount in the pot. Generally, everything that you know the amount in advance - which I think is pretty much everything these days - is split, then any variable bills would be split bill-by-bill. Nobody should have a 'float' or leftover money. The way I've done this before is either one person has everything come from their account, or different people take responsibility for each bill: it depends if there's likely to be a cashflow issue.

Ok, yes, I see what you mean leaky. Thank you

This.

As long as everyone coughs up on time, it can be good for building your credit rating to have one of them in your name. But it does mean you're liable if they don't all pay up promptly.

Yes that became a problem for my son in his last shared accommodation and people refused to cover final bills!

To avoid that it's probably better to share liability so each person is responsible for one bill if that makes sense. Makes it a bit more complicated admin wise but avoids the issue of one person having liability for everything.

Yes, I think her worry is exactly that.

I've used an app called Collctiv for splitting bills, It's similar to what PayPal Money pools did
Their website is here! www.collctiv.com/
