Any insurance experts out there? Need advice...

Plan to buy a second home with dh, a dilapidated place to re-develop. Dh mostly doing the work himself but with tradesmen to do the big bits. A bit unsure about insurance. How can we cover ourselves in case of damage caused by dh's work (to our house or the neighbouring apartments in the building or liability in case of injury). I know that anything done by tradesmen would be covered by their insurance (as long as we only use tradesmen who are insured). However, dh is not in the trade so don't know if he would qualify for insurance in case of damage caused by his work. Also we'd like to have some kind of home and contents insurance in case of damage due to storms, vandalism etc. and to cover replacement of tools etc in case of break-in. Also, the house is very dilapidated (the survey suggests that it would not be suitable to secure a mortgage, but our loan is secured on our 1st house), and the house will be unoccupied until the work is finished so don't know if it qualifies for home and contents insurance.

Somebody help please.

Usually the house has to be in a reasonable state for insurance. You can get accidental damage cover for work your dh is doing.
Sounds like you'd have to speak to a more specialist type of insurer for the building.

Sorry, it's been a long time since being a loss adjuster. Cant remember much else at the mo.
