Easy to open bank for teens??

whattodo2019 · 30/06/2021 19:33

My teens have been using GoHenry cards for the past few years but for various reasons they need to open bank accounts.

Which banks offer easy to open accounts for teens? I tried last summer during lockdown and it was a minefield simply getting an appointment...So I gave up!

How old? I ended up opening a high at one for DS because his passport had lapsed (obviously de doesnt drive or pay utility bills), so I could only get one for him at our ban (as we vouched for him).

What age are they?
I opened my dcs accounts online with Santander

mrsmoppp · 30/06/2021 19:36

All my dd's have accounts with Lloyds bank, very easy process to set up and they all have contactless cards

Shelddd · 30/06/2021 19:38

How old are they? Starling is pretty good. Everything is with your phone no appointments. They have a youth account for 16-17. They also have a product for younger kids called starling kite.

14 end of July and 16 beginning of September.
Neither have passports in date!

I don't think any will be much easier/harder than the rest - you need the same ID wherever you go.

colincarrot · 30/06/2021 19:53

Nat west was easy online once we got the passport sorted

userxx · 30/06/2021 21:45

Santander mini. I dint think monzo or starling does under 16 year olds.

Just tried but One parent needs to have a NatWest account

Santander is an online application

RNBrie · 30/06/2021 22:35

I'd go with Starling. I swapped my kids from GoHenry to Starling Kite accounts recently (same idea but cheaper than GoHenry)

I had to open my own Starling account and it took no time at all. Highly recommended.

championthewonderhorse70 · 30/06/2021 22:41

DS just got one at Natwest but we have ours there too. DD has Halifax shit kids account

Landslidelife · 30/06/2021 23:07

Easiest is probably who the parents bank with.
Dc2&3 have a santander account which was easy to open on line. Didn't need a passport.
Dc1 who was 16 opened a Halifax account in person last year 'because its opening hours fitted in with college'.

sandalsinthebin · 01/07/2021 14:24

Monzo was easy for DS think he may have needed passport though

Mumbletum · 01/07/2021 14:25

Nationwide has been great for my son
I think he opened it age 12 ish

toffeebutterpopcorn · 01/07/2021 15:08

I think of the account is yours and he is to have access you can get away with Pugh the child’s passport (birth certificate needed) but if they want it in their own name then you do need a passport (although as I said, we did this for DS since we’ve had the account for over 30 years!)

Harpydragon · 01/07/2021 15:10

Nationwide here too, did it when my son was 13.

motogogo · 01/07/2021 16:01

Mine have NatWest, it was straightforward because I had an account

RedHelenB · 01/07/2021 22:01

Barclays.

eeyore228 · 01/07/2021 22:04

@ whattodo2019 I don't have a Natwest account and we've just opened one with them. I had to provide my ID and DD birth certificate. No previous history with them and her card arrived last week.

bigbaggyeyes · 01/07/2021 22:19

I've just opened one for my dd with NatWest. I bank with them which has taken a lot of the hassle out of it. But she's got an app, internet banking and a debit card. It's pretty much a normal bank account.

ChickenSchnitzel · 03/07/2021 07:46

RBS for my 11 Yr old, was very straightforward.

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 03/07/2021 07:50

Another vote for Santader, really quick and simple online. Efficient service, card received promptly and app easy to use.

Our own bank was a nightmare and we gave up with them in the end.

nameychange · 03/07/2021 07:52

Mine both have nationwide accounts. Really easy to use app plus a card.

couchparsnip · 03/07/2021 07:55

I got them a Nationwide Flex one account each.
It pays a tiny bit of interest and has no fees on overseas transactions. They can also keep it until they are 23 with the same benefits which would be good for travelling later on.
I don't think the parent needs to have an account with Nationwide just has to sign the forms etc.
