eHt,iya

I posted this in pets but no response.

I bought a Rabbit on saturday.

It hasnt eaten or pooped since.

I took it to the vets yesterday who said its 'underweight'

and gave him an injection to make him eat.

He ate some carrot and hay and did 2 sloppy poos.

Vet says it isnt right and to bring himin again,

but i cant afford to take on an ill animal.

the pet shoip have told me to take the rabbit to their vets (paid for by them) to have him checked out.

I really dont want a refund as i think they will just give me my £26 and have the rabbit put down.

Am really stuck

I'd say it's early days and see if he's better in a week

jangly · 20/11/2007 12:46

I would take him to the pet shop vet and see what they say. Perhaps its just a temporary bug.

BibiThree · 20/11/2007 12:50

Ask for your money back if he's ill (see the pet shop's vet) but keep the rabbit. I hope he gets better soon

Winetimeisfinetime · 20/11/2007 12:51

Why not take it to the vet paid for by the pet shop. It may be something that they can treat the rabbit for and at least it won't cost you. You can also quiz their vet on the shop's policy re sick animals as presumably they would take it to that vet if they were going to have it put down. I understand exactly how you feel as I wouldn't want to take it back if I thought it was just going to be put to sleep.

EmilyDavidson · 20/11/2007 12:58

I would take the rabbit to see the pet shop vet ,it will be free and it might be good news. If its bad news then at least you will be making the decision based on facts.

Try to tempt him with whatever fresh veg is rabbits favourite ?

southeastastra · 20/11/2007 12:59

i did actuall make my mother in law take a dead hamster back to the shop for another one.

KittyletteItBe · 20/11/2007 13:02

He wont eat cabbage or carrot, well he did eat some carrot but only after he had the injection to make him hungry.

southeastastra · 20/11/2007 13:05

how old is he kittlette?

wannaBe · 20/11/2007 13:07

You shouldn't give rabbits cabbage as it can give them colic.

If you buy an animal you need to be prepared for the fact that you may incur vet bills, but for now I would take the rabbit to the petshop vet and see what they say. I would then ring the local animal welfare department and have them do an inspection on said shop as having sick animals that they are selling to the public is just not on - if that rabbit is sick then the othes most likely are too and they should be quarantined until there is no trace of illness in the shop.

Wannabe - I am prepared to incure vet bills, but not from an illness that has occoured long before the rabbit was sold to me!

And every animal I have ever owned has had insurance, I didnt even have time to take any out before i saw he was ill, and pets aren't covered for 'illness' until 14 days AFTER the insurance starts - because the breeder/ shop is responsible for illness up to that point.

The pet shop told me to give him cabbage.

the pet shop are ill informed. no greens for rabbits. especially under 4 months (i think!). it can make them very ill. how old is he

KittyletteItBe · 20/11/2007 13:13

He is 8 weeks.

The vet also told me to give him 'greens'

OP posts:
southeastastra · 20/11/2007 13:15

blimey that's awful advice. that's probably why the rabbit is ill.

the vet told you that as well? i'm a bit shocked. they shop shouldn't be selling rabbits at all. is it a big chain or a small independent shop?

wannaBe · 20/11/2007 13:15

wel, you have the option of taking him to the petshop vet so I would take him to the petshop vet.

What kind of petshop is it? is it a nice little local reputable one? or a national one whose reputation for the care of their animals is not exemplary?

wannaBe · 20/11/2007 13:16

lol snap southeast

KittyletteItBe · 20/11/2007 13:17

Pets at Home

big chainstore.

Silly to get one from there but it wasn't planned.

I know what you mean kitty. We took our rabbit of 3 weeks back to the shop because it just couldn't be handled. The manager offered us an exchange, to a chorus of 'No!' from dds, but I'm not sure what her fate would have been had we agreed to that. Having said that, there was a rabbit there that had obviously been returned and offered for sale at a discount since it had been 'traumatised'.

It was PetsatHom, which I thought looked like the Argos of pet shops, but which in fact had very knowledgeable and helpful staff.

Are you feeding it exactly the same stuff the pet shop gave it?

OrmIrian · 20/11/2007 13:21

I am beginning to have very little faith in pet shops. Having been given so many opposing bits of advice about pets - mainly fish. But also DS's rats.

I would use the pet shop vet to start with. But the cabbage advice does sound wrong to me.

LadyVictoriaOfCakeThe2nd · 20/11/2007 13:21

what else are you offering the rabbit to eat?

callmeovercautious · 20/11/2007 13:21

Just a tip but also when he is better feed him a pellet all in one feed not the mixed stuff. Every Rabbit I have known that is fed on mixed feed picks out some bits and leaves the others so their diet is not balanced.

You can get a junior rabbit pellet feed made by Excel. Specially designed for their young tummies.

Hope he is better soon.

wannaBe · 20/11/2007 13:23

oh god say no more .

Well I would take the rabbit to their vet, but I wouldn't take it back to the petshop, because they will probably put it back in with the rest of the rabbits and continue to sell sick animals to unsuspecting members of the public. I would then ring the RSPCA and tell them that this shop is selling animals that are in questionable health, and back that up with a report from your own vet.

And never buy an animal from said petshop again.
