Cost of living

I could cry. Why oh why is everything getting so expensive? It's making me panick quite abit Sad

Pretty much every one of my outgoings has gone up. I cut back everything I possibly could too. My Gas and Electricity was the worst. Baring in mind I have lived here for 10 years and every year I am always over £400 in credit. My monthly bills are always less than my direct debit, unless during colder months when it's little over a monthly payment, my new monthly payments are £25 more than what I am used to paying. Ever! And that's with moving supplier for the best tariff! Tonight I provided my meter readings which triggered my monthly statement. My usage is starting to become less but I was shocked by my bill. Let's just say I have never paid that much a month ever! And of my monthly payment it was nearly all eaten up by my readings. I even had to check I'd input the correct readings. I had! I've always input monthly readings the whole time I've been here so I've really felt the increase in cost this month for sure, and that's using less units. Its already making me worry about the winter months to the point where I am unsure I will be able to keep the house warm. Something I've never even thought twice about, the heating always went on.

Its actually put me on a right downer to be fair as it feels the cost of basic living has all rocketed. I'm a single parent working 30 hours a week. No more hours are available to me at work due to my role, however its useful to a degree as I can be around for the school run both before and after school and I still get to be a Mom. I think because I am my son's only parent I've made sure I am around for him as much as I can. I do look for alternative work though but am yet to find anything suitable. But I also like my job, just wish it paid more. More hours would have been ideal but unfortunately not possible.

Sorry for me venting my worries. I know I won't be the only one feeling this way. Just wondering if others are worrying too? For some perspective I could only afford around 30 a week on the food shop before. That's now up to between 40 and 45 and week, and my normal outgoings are all up a total of £35 over the month. So there's nearly £100 more than I am used to paying out a month. My take home salary is under £1100 a month and we live with no social life or luxuries.

This sucks Sad

Any tips will be much appreciated

Have you looked into whether you are entitled to any government benefits?

Ratatattatpat · 27/05/2021 00:12

You should get some universe credit I think. You should check. Possibly free school meals as well. You should contact citizens advice. They will be able to take you through all available help.
I agree with you an on the cost of living. Electricity prices are soaring and food has gone up.

I receive some tax credits. UC credit works out at much less due to me having a mortgage. My son is only entitled to free school meals for the next month or so. I've been told that because I get tx credits and not UC we aren't eligible. This is despite earning we'll under the threshold.

I think the jump in everything has shocked me. The energy especially. We don't leave anything on or running but it isn't something you can stop using is it. Sorry for the silly question but why are energy prices rising so significantly?

Electric cost went down in early 2020 and is now going up.

Can you go on a fixed rate tariff? I generally fix for 2 year periods so my unit price stays stable but then I get a jump in price ever 2 years.

SpideyMom · 27/05/2021 09:12

I always fix. The cheapest tariff to me this year was still £25 more a month than I was paying
