YNAB - or alternatives?

We need to get a grip on our spending! Is YNAB (you need a budget app) still considered good or are there newer alternatives?

It was a colleague who really recommended YNAB years ago, I thought it looked a bit footery to use, thought I'd give spreadsheets a go - did not work as my husband didn't get on board.

If anyone uses it how fine detail do you go down to? For example a supermarket shop will sometimes consist of gifts, clothes & house stuff. I would be ok extracting this, but I suspect I would have to do it all!

I love YNAB and have used it for about two years now.

I occasionally break amounts down but not very often (I just don’t really shop like that I think). So if I buy say some clothes for me and something for the kitchen from a department store I’ll split the total spend. For supermarket shops almost never, I class all toiletries, cleaning stuff and do on under a broad groceries category.

Thanks, will try the free trial! Also been reading some suggestions of how to deal with cash - not that anyone uses much cash these days...

I've used ynab for almost 10 years and I will rave about it to anyone who listens.
If managing your money is something you want to do, it is an amazing tool and has revolutionised my financial situation.
The trial is worth doing, but if you're in debt, I think it takes at least 6 months to feel like you're making any headway. It is worth persisting. Try it for a year and I bet you won't want to stop. Your dh will need to engage with the method though, even if he doesn't engage with inputting the data.

Well after a bit of effort getting to grips I can safely say I'm a complete convert! I'm slightly obsessed Grin

We were just frittering money away, but I still need to get DH fully on board...
