Just counted how many times I've been to the supermarket in the last month!!!

I've just been looking at my bank account and have logged how many times between us (dh and I) have been to a supermarket/food shop in the last month and I counted 39 transactions!! Amounting to 475.00 approx. So although that's not a huge amount to spend on food in a month, we are obviously very disorganised! So I'm aiming this month to go a lot less and hoping to cut the cost.

How many times a month do you go food shopping?

I haven’t been since March 2020

CompleteBarstool · 25/04/2021 20:49

We tend to do 1 main shop a week and then maybe 1 or 2 extra trips for maybe milk, bread or one or two other bits

Sounds a more sensible amount. I've just done a click and collect for next week, a big shop with all the store cupboard etc for a month then I'll need to get perishable for the other 3 weeks. That's the plan!!

I go once a week. Sometimes I can drag it out to one every 9-10 days

I start the month with a decent shop, then all the other times are little bits here and there, all seems seems to go wrong. I only have a tiny freezer which doesn't help but could still be much better organised!

I'm terrible for this too.
It feels like I go all the time- there is always something we need!

sanfranfibber · 25/04/2021 21:01

How on earth are you going almost 10 times a week?!

Parker231 · 25/04/2021 21:03

One online delivery a week and one top up for fresh food each week.

BeyondMyWits · 25/04/2021 21:06

Not been food shopping in an actual supermarket since 2016. Online delivery here once a week. Spend about £80 a week for 3 adults.

PattyPan · 25/04/2021 21:07

I tend to get a delivery once a week (reduces impulse buying!) and then occasionally top up with fruit mid-week if needed. Going more than once a day is crazy!

I have no idea...bread, milk odd things here and there!! No excuse but both work shift and just very manic.

I went to M&S this week and it’s the first time I’ve been in a supermarket type shop for a year . Pre covid I never did a ‘big’ shop and was in a supermarket at least 4x a week . I now online shop , generally once a week and go to the farm shop once a week . Saves loads of money , less food waste and I cook a wider variety of meals .

flowerycurtain · 25/04/2021 21:09

That's nuts! Once a week online delivery here.

The caveat being we have a lot of cupboard space and freezer space.

GlowWine · 25/04/2021 21:11

Once a week, no top ups - but a veg box delivery. I mostly bake our own bread (for the last 20+ years)

Feelingpoorlysick · 25/04/2021 21:11

Once a week for us. £300 budget for 2 adults, 1 child, dog and cat.

I know, it's crazy....we do opposite shifts, dont see much of each other but need to come up with a plan. From looking it looks like my dh is going one part of the day and me the other..

Every Friday. We plan our meals for the week along with lunches and it works out. Maybe every other week we might pop in if we fancy something extra or run out. I find meal planning and buying what you need only for that week stops so much waste. Obviously I have extra cupboard goods but my fridge and freezer goods get mostly eaten each week.

AgeLikeWine · 25/04/2021 21:17

During the first lockdown and this winter’s lockdown, once a fortnight, maximum.

Now I have been vaccinated and there is a lot less covid around, so I'm back to shopping two or three times a week and visiting more than one supermarket, usually Lidl plus Waitrose or M&S.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 25/04/2021 21:19

I do this when i'm insanely busy but it's actually more time consuming than sitting down for half an hour, meal planning and then shopping or online shopping.

The thing with being busy is I tend to rush in for "something quick for dinner" but I do it every night! I'm learning to try and cut down.

whysorude · 25/04/2021 21:22

Beaming, I was just lamenting similar to DH this morning. It's ridiculous and needs to stop. Blush

Let's try and stop it together! I have just booked a large click and collect for next week, enough non perishable for a month then planning 3 more shops after for non perishables.

Could you invest in a good, tall fridge freezer?

BearGum · 25/04/2021 21:26

I used to be like you, popping into Waitrose three or four times a week. I've now not been supermarket shopping for around a year, as soon as I was able to get some online slots. We now have a supermarket delivery about every ten days. I buy fruit and veg from our local market once a week, fresh bread from the bakers a couple of times a week and occasionally pop into the local convenience supermarket for odds and sods. I save SO much time being a bit more organised. Worth every penny of the delivery fee.

TheCanyon · 25/04/2021 21:27

Family of 6 and last time I totted it up it was 800+ a month. Dh would nip in after work for bits/kids snacks etc., He's been shielding so it's been magic spending on other things. Ends tomorrow though...

Our really big fridge freezer broke after 10 years. We actually do have a new one. The thing I did find when doing big shops is that we use to waste more. What I may do is buy a chest freezer and get some electric in the shed. Then I can have more than 1 loaf of bread at a time etc..
