Mortgage applications

We are trying to move house, and ideally before 30/6, to take advantage of the stamp duty holiday.

We have an AIP with our bank which is being progressed by the underwriters. However, following a call with a mortgage broker they have recommended a cheaper mortgage. I'd like to progress them both to maximise the chances of a firm offer. The cheaper, second one would be better but the saving is not such that I would wish to jeopardise the position with the bank.

I've read that pursuing two mortgage applications at the same time could affect your credit rating. I can see this is the case if we were eventually turned down for one but, assuming this is not the case, is there a downside?

Thanks in advance for any insight/advice.
