Child benefit over payment query

6rainbow · 15/04/2021 14:54

Slightly confused and worried about not declaring the right information on my self assessment for child benefit.

My gross pay is £59k and taxable pay is about £51.5k as pension contributions are very high.

Am I right in thinking I workout my salary for child benefit purposes is £51.5k

If either you or your partner has an income of more than £50,000 a year before tax then you'll have to pay back some (or all) of your Child Benefit in the form of extra Income Tax.

From Gov.co.uk

So it doesn’t really matter if it is 59k or 51k. You are probably not entitled to full child benefit. It does read as if it is your full salary before deductions, which is the figure the child benefit office use.

You complete a tax self assessment which makes the appropriate deductions but broadly speaking yes.

CatherineCawood · 15/04/2021 15:01

Yes you are correct you work it out AFTER pension payments. So you won't get the full child benefit but most of it. HTH.

You are correct, tinty is wrong. You can also deduct childcare or any other tax free benefit you have.

Of course it matters whether it is £51K or £59K.

The difference between losing almost all or almost nothing!

And you’re completely wrong about it being full salary.

Not only are work pensions deductible, but so are personal pension payments, so you can make a small additional payment and keep your CB - so not more money in your current pocket, but some in your future pocket.

You can also deduct childcare vouchers (old scheme if still in it) and there are several other allowed deductions.

@Tinty it’s better not to answer if you don’t know.

Thanks - I knew I had to pay back some child benefit and tried to complete the online calculator on Gov web site!

So does that mean if I pay an extra £1.6k per year into the pension to bring my taxable salary after pension to £49.9k I won't have to pay any child benefit back ?

Yep! There are other offsets though. I think there still a 'buy a bike' scheme if you fancy that? Childcare vouchers? Uniform allowance? Charity donations? Professional fees?
