Energy supplier and direct debit help

Moved into new flat which is on Eon. Had to set up a direct debit with them and chose variable direct debit (can anyone tell me what this is please) and also changing supplier so will only be with Eon for a matter of weeks. However, it says my first bill is due 5th July? Anyone know why? Thank you

Quarterly billing? You pay monthly DD and then they send an actual bill every quarter to show what youve used and if you are in credit or debit. I guess

@Larryslockdownlunch oh ok that's makes sense haha. First time living on my own it's confusing! So we pay the set price each month then every 3 months they send us what we've actually used. Credit will be anything we haven't used and debit is what we still owe if we use more? I'm confused 😂

Yes, so say you pay £50 a month and the quarterly bill is for £140, your bill will show that you are in credit by £10. That balance will be carried forward to the bill for the next quarter.

It is usual to overpay in the summer months, so you have some in hand when you use more energy in the winter. So they calculate your monthly d/d as one twelfth of what they think you will use in a year. At the end of the year it should even out. Once the year is up, they either increase or reduce your d/d accordingly. Sometimes if you vastly overpay you can ask for a refund, and if you have underpaid then you can pay extra.
