Gas and electricity switching supplier help?

Confusing one here! Never moved out before. Our new flat is electric only. When I'm going on moneysupermarket and getting quotes I'm clicking "electric only" it's quoting me around £67 per month. Now when I click electric only do they think I have gas with someone else and only want electric through them or are they factoring in that I'm electric only? So confused!😂it will only be me and my baby and partner living there and I'm at home all day so does that sound about right?

No they think its electric only which means you will be using electricity for heating and hot water where most people use gas therefore they factor that in to the price. £67 a month sounds fine. Give monthly meter readings and they can adjust the monthly amount to how much you are actually using which might end up being more given the fact you have a baby so lots of washing and you are in most of the day.

murbblurb · 03/04/2021 20:11

No, it is electric only. Remember that the amount is fairly meaningless. Look at the unit price and standing charge, which is a little hidden to aid the bamboozling.

Electricity is around 17p a unit at the moment and will only go up. If the place has storage heaters you need a suitable tariff.

@Bunnybigears thanks for your reply! My partner works away in the week also and we don't have a bath, only shower. It's a 1 bedroom flat. What do you think it will be roughly a month? I'm so new to this I have no idea!😂

@murbblurb yeah I've looked at those makes no sense to me!😂I'm not sure if we have storage heaters or not? We have these ( will attach photo ) which we turn on like normal heating whenever we want to use them. It's a 1 bedroom flat so not big at all but we have those in each room. How do I find a storage heater tarrif?

I couldnt say it would depend on so many things, what kind of heaters do you have? How old is the boiler? Double or triple glazed windows? What floor is the flat on? What is the insulation like? Storage Heaters? Is it an economy 7 meter? Etc etc call the supplier you think you want to go with and ask to speak to their energy efficiency department. Where I used tonwork we could put all these various bits and bobs into a computer system and tell you roughly how much you would use but no one can be tht accurate as it all depends on how you actually use the energy when you are in there.

Bunnybigears · 03/04/2021 20:19

Yep they are storage heaters, you really need advice on how to use them efficiently or they can cost a fortune, if you are not on an economy 7 meter they are a nightmare.

confettiballoons · 03/04/2021 20:21

I don’t think they look like storage heaters - if they warm up as soon as you turn them on they’re not storage heaters.

£70 a month feels about right. I work for an energy supplier, uSwitch is a good place to get a quote but don’t go with the cheapest supplier if you haven’t heard of them as often they go bust. Get a quote on uSwitch and then check out your favourite supplier direct (google their site) as sometimes they’ll offer deals for signing up direct (they have to pay uSwitch quite a big fee).

NewMum2021x · 03/04/2021 20:24

@confettiballoons yeah we can set them to timers but as soon as we switch them on it starts warming up the room until we turn it off. So I literally have no idea?😂I'm so confused. When I go on uswitch the best rated etc is octopus energy, I'm going to call them on Tuesday but the only tarrif they offer me when I put my post code in is their flexible tarrif doesn't say anything about any other tarrif so I'm a bit baffled!

Ah actually on second look they do look a bit small for storage heaters, either way electricity is an expensive way to heat a home so make sure all your insulation is up to scratch.

NewMum2021x · 03/04/2021 20:27

@confettiballoons all I know is that we have smart meters too?

confettiballoons · 03/04/2021 20:36

Ok so our email system is pretty good. Let’s test it. If you email [email protected] and put ‘FAO Mumsnet Confetti Balloons’ in the subject line I will search for the email this evening and respond!

NewMum2021x · 03/04/2021 20:53

Ok I will do that now!😂✌🏼thank you!!!

I also don't think those are storage heaters. You need to find out if you have a dual rate meter. If it is a smart meter from the last 18 months or so it should stay smart if you switch supplier. If not you will be back to readings.

Ask octopus for their best smart meter rate. If you can be flexible when you do stuff you can play the rates and do better. It will be a variable tariff.

Octopus person, please explain!

Do the heater have dials with input and output in them? If so, they are storage heaters. If not, they may just be electric heaters
