How much do you spend on children's shoes and clothes?

How much do you roughly spend per month or year on your children's shoes and clothes? I'm trying to budget and struggling to work it out. My kids are 2.5 and 5 months so no school uniform etc yet.
I know shoes cost a bloody fortune and I normally buy second hand clothes but haven't been able to recently.

About £600 per year for DS. Im planning on buying less once he's at school and in uniform. Tbh he has too many clothes and we wash every day so I don't think he needs as much as he has currently.

Shoes, per year: 1 pair trainers, 1 pair walking boots, 1 pair summer shoes. 2 pairs school shoes.
Wellies I can usually get away with every other year by buying a bit big and using a liner.
Shoes average about £30 per pair, so £150 a year, another £7 for the wellies.
Some footwear can be handed down, but can't count on it.

Coats, I try to buy a bit big to get at least a couple of years out of them, I might manage 3 years.
One lightweight waterproof and 1 winter coat each. £30 a year if they can last 3 years.

Probably £200-£250 a year on out of school clothes.

I haven't had to buy any school uniform this year (bought big, and younger Dc has sibling's old uniform).

The year before I probably spent £200, including sports kit.

So say £100 a year on uniform.

So about £550 a year on elder Dc, much less on younger sibling though, due to all the hand-me downs.

I have one DD who's 2. About £30-50 per month I'd say. Some months more and some less so estimating that's average. I only have one child and should really be better at buying second hand but I'm quite picky and find the online shops too alluring

SecondBabyGirl · 24/03/2021 05:51

At those ages buying bundles on eBay or Facebook marketplace will still work out very cheap. Plus apart from the odd nice outfit here or there, you don’t want them in anything expensive as they get covered in food/mud/paint etc all the time anyway. Bundles are almost always cheaper than charity shops unless you’re rummaging in the 50p basket.

Pre-covid i used to spend every Sunday in the Summer going to bootfairs looking for good quality clothes, shoes & wellies.. have tried buying second hand off facebook and ebay but you can't tell the quality and i'm often disappointed. I'm really hoping they start up again soon!

Too much Blush about £100+ a month. He's now old enough that he's trashing clothes at nursery though so going back to Asda multipacks of 10 tops for £16 now. Will save a fortune despite what feels like a permanent growth spurt.

Eileen101 · 24/03/2021 07:37

An average of about £50-70 if we're including shoes. I try and source as much second hand as possible - things like vests, trousers, bundles for nursery clothes from eBay. DD has bundles of hand me downs from nieces and wears quite a bit of DSs old stuff while they're still at toddler and baby age.
I buy shoes and pants new and I do some frugi sale shopping for some colourful t shirts for DS as they're just nicer than the regular shops and helpfully, have buttons on the neckline which helps with him hating stuff being pulled over his head. DD has some frugi sale bargain too because I'm an easy sell for a pretty summer dress Blush

I probably spend around £150 a year on just regular clothes or each of my three. Mostly from primark and asda. Not including all the coats and shoes, wellies, gloves, lost hats, swim suits, etc. I do accept lots of hand me downs so I quite often get the more expensive stuff gifted. I think last year I just spent £30 each for summer/autumn clothes. I normally ask family for some clothes too for Xmas and birthdays, and they're quite happy to oblige, so the kids get a toy and I recieve a little bundle.

Thesearmsofmine · 30/04/2021 21:54

It depends. Ds2 recently had a massive growth spent(he is 10) and I spent around £200 to get him sorted for summer but still need to buy a new coat and jeans for him plus a few nicer tops.

Youngest is 5 and has a lot of hand me downs so I soend less on him but tend to buy a few more expensive items to mix in with the hand me downs.

MrsLeclerc · 30/04/2021 22:06

DS is 2 and I buy the next size up in higher priced items in the end of season sales if possible. Coats, snowsuits and nicer brands like Boden or Gap get bought in the sales.

Then I get all the basics at the start of the season in one or two big shops. I normally do a big Primark shop for tops, trousers, vests and PJs. As I couldn’t get to one this year I did it online at H&M. I got most of his summer clothes and spent about £80.

I might buy one or two items on impulse but that’s about it. He still has too many clothes though!

Around £50/month between 2 children (1.5&4yo). Though the lions share gose on the eldest as we keep quite a lot to pass on. Once the 4yo starts school I plan on cutting down on the amount of cloths, as he will spend most of the week in uniform. The youngest will be 2 by then, so getting less hand me downs, as cloths fit for long enough to get ruined, so will probably move to a more even spending split.
