Reversed into a car in a carpark, think bloke is trying it on.

So yes I now its my fault, got out and apolgised. It was a very slight bump as I'd only travelled about 10cm before I hit him.

I look at the cars and can't see any damage to either car.

I have a small Yaris which is pretty much vertical at the back apart from a low down bumper. Bloke is ranting at me and points out 2 large horizontal scratches on his bonnet - on the flat bit of his bonnet which is way higher than my bumper. He has no damage to his bumper which sticks out 6 inches further than where the scratches are, no damage to his number plate, no damage to the vertical grill bit. I really think he's trying it on. The scratches even look like they're going rusty inside. His car is 19 years old Peugeot and the whole bonnet looks like the paint is beginning to crack through age and these "scratches" look more like that. I gave him my mobile number, he didn't want to give me his. I've taken photos of the damage. Even the security guard said it didn't look like the damage was caused by my car.

So what do I do if he rings up - tell him to go jump (as dh says) or give him my insurance details?

Also a friend of mine reckons that if you have a bump in a private carpark you don't have to provide insurance details or pay for any damage even if it is your fault. If I thought I'd damaged it I'd pay, but really can't see how my car could have.

Am pretty sure you should provide insurance details wherever the accident occurs and even if you can't see any damage.

chipkid · 06/11/2007 14:16

you should give him your insurance details. Tell your insurance comapny that you have photos and that you are disputing the damage that he says you caused.

Even though it is a private car park I am not aware of anything that says you donot have to give your details.

Pass all the information on to your insurance company - photos and everything. I had the same thing happen - someone claiming me reversing out of a spot very slowly into them caused ££££s of damage. I saw one scratch on their coloured bumper. Think they must have had an accident shortly afterwards. My insurance company informed the other insurance company I was disputing the claim and that was the last I heard about it(3 years ago now).

Will me ringing the insurance company up to tell them affect my future policy costs?

Sorry had to go after wrote last message.
The claim I had made against me seemed to be dropped when I disputed it, so it never affected my no claims, so no difference in cost when I renewed next time. Lots of luck.

CaptainUnderpants · 06/11/2007 16:52

If you go through your insurance company 9 which strongly advise to do ) and you start a claim then if claim isn't resloved by time your renewal comes up then it might affect your premiun. If it is resolved as a @no Fault' then it shouldn't affect it.

With a guy like this let the professionals sort it out.

If you have exchanged names & address and Cra reg nos then thats is really all you need as HIS insurance company ( if he has one ) will be abel to sort it out from those details .

The police national computer to which insurance companies have access will give details of your insurance company.

There is no harm in giving him the details as they will be found out anyway.

Make sure that you make it clear to your company that you are disputing the amount of damaged caused .

CaptainUnderpants · 06/11/2007 16:52

Should read ' car reg nos '

CaptainUnderpants · 06/11/2007 16:54

Having a bump in a car park is the same as having a bump on the road so details are always required to be exchanged .

Hekate · 06/11/2007 16:55

Def go through insurance - sounds like you may get a phone call demanding you pay him in cash to avoid the 'hassle' of insurance claim. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

mumtosophieandjordon · 08/11/2007 13:21

My dh had this we was at a round about the guy in front pulled out, road was clear dh went to go guy in front slammed his brakes on for no reason, we was only doing 3mph so no serious damage. Both had a crack number plate, so we
Exchanged details guys dad rang dh saying this that and the rest was wrong it was costing £1000 dh said no we both checked and it was fine.
So anyway dh called our insurance told them and even the police stopped so we had witnesses insurance said they would look in to it before anything was paid out, we never heard again untill our renewal came and it had the details on that.
So dh called them to be told they dont need to tell us if they paid him etc as we was in the wrong so for a cracked number plate he got a big £1440 i am so annoyed as our insurance has gone up a further £42 a mth.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 08/11/2007 16:27

I must admit I still haven't rang the insurance company. Am waiting to see if the bloke rings me - he hasn't yet. Its awful that some people will fib so badly.

A horrid bloke bumped into me and refused to give me his details. Police said they couldn't do anything because it was in a private car park

RustyBear · 10/11/2007 20:21

mumtosophieandjordon - I'm afraid the guy in the car in front of you might not have been pulling a fast one - someone went into the back of Dh's car a few years ago & it seemed like there was no damage so he let it go - but he later found out his car was a quarter of an inch shorter than it had been & it took a lot off the resale price.
