How do I find out if I have an insurance policy?

When I was in my teens and moving out of home my parents had a man come round to the house to fill in a form with my details- I remember lots of questions about health, smoking etc. I think it may have been some kind of health or life insurance policy, but don't remember much as it was decades ago.

Parents are not contactable- is there any other way I can find out exactly what this policy was and who it was with? Other than ringing round every single insurance company individually?

If it's life insurance I want to change the beneficiary to DH as he may never be able to work again due to disability, so would like to make sure he will be provided for if anything happens to me.

If it’s a life or health insurance policy then surely someone must have been paying it all these years?

SerPants · 20/02/2021 21:21

At first I presume my parents did, of course they may have stopped in the intervening years but I can't contact them at them moment so no way of finding out from them.

If it was decades ago, even if you had an insurance policy it will almost certainly have expired. Most have a set term (or are insanely expensive so end up cancelled after a few years).

If they aren’t paying it then it won’t exist anymore. Best just to start your own policy.

Are you an only child or could you get your sister that still speaks to your parents to to ask them if such policy exists for you both?

It’s possible that they do still have a policy for you but if you’re not speaking I’d imagine they would have cancelled it.

It’s a long time to pay for someone even if it’s just a tenner a month or whatever.

And I imagine they would be the beneficiaries as they paid the money and wouldn’t let that be changed anyhoo.

As a pp said, time to get your own policy. I’d not be advertising it to DH though in case he murdered me for it and I became a patio on the back yard.... Grin

OP,

Prudential used to do this sort of thing ('The Man from the Pru'). Savings plans, pensions etc.

You can make an enquiry to them with your then address, date of birth, national insurance number and date range of when it could be.

I'm about to do the same myself - I was 'encouraged' into getting some sort of policy aged 16 by the man who used to come to my own parents house. I am sure it wouldn't be allowed now.

There may have been other similar orgs, but I know Prudential was the one in my case.

But who took the policy out? If your parents did then it's (almost) nothing to do with you - they'd get any payout, you can't just change the beneficiary to someone else's policy.

We traced some of DPs lost policies with this www.mylostaccount.org.uk/ website

As a PP suggested try contacting Prudential. Also Co-op insurance used to do home sales
too.
