Yes. We have to with my mum's. Cost double as well due to it being empty.

Tortington · 02/11/2007 19:48

Well, we're just renewing the original policy (not my decision!) and it was £800! Re-negotiated down to £650. Still a rip-off. But house under offer so assume we won't pay full 12 months. Or we may do, who knows?

OK here, thanks. Feel crap having to sell it though, don't want to. How about you?

Tortington · 02/11/2007 19:55

can't wait to get rid - its a big worry and pain in the arse its 300 miles away and we have to rely on family to keep checking on it.

how are you in yourself though?

Yes, we're all not nearby as well so doesn't make sense to keep it. Am ok mostly, but felt very down last week and am not looking forward to xmas at all really.

How about you?

Insurance could be had for a lot cheaper...

Plus council tax needs to be paid soon at 90%.

Tortington · 02/11/2007 20:24

tis v. weird - hard to explain - am trez confused with feelings - sadness then anger mostly.

blummin' eck, didn't think of council tax. solicitor has taken care of everything until now.

Hello - just found this thread. Also in same boat having to insure dead mother's house, which is many miles away and sitting empty. It does cost over the odds, I pay £250 every three months with Jardine Lloyd Thompson, who were recommended by my solicitor/Law Society. It's structural only, no contents and should I cancel, I wouldn't get anything refunded. It was a nightmare finding anywhere to insure it, especially since sitting empty it's been vandalised... very sad situation...

Sorry to hear about your loss Custardo and Tinker.

Can I just ask, while I'm here, what's this about paying council tax? I don't know anything about that....

Tinker · 23/11/2007 17:37

Katie - you get 6 months grace from paying council tax after a house has become empty through death. Then it has to be paid. Council tax used to at be 50% for empty houses but councils now have the discretion to apply council tax at up to 90%. The idea of 6 months is that you could have sold it by then!

Sorry to hear of your loss as well katie
