Do I need an IFA? Rental property

I rent out my old flat now DH and I have moved in together. Have done the HMRC tax self assessment and I can't help thinking there could be more things I can claim against tax. Tbh, I didn't really understand some of the categories and how they work. like when i added in the gift aid payments I'd made, my payment went up? Does anyone know of a dummies guide or do I need an IFA? TIA.

A tax adviser or accountant would generally be more useful to you than an IFA for this. And the gov.uk website has lots of useful info about tax and self-assessment.

That gov.uk website has guides on BTL and what you can and cannot claim.

IFA's don't usually deal with tax returns (some do). You'd be better talking to an accountant (who may be cheaper too as IFAs can be pretty expensive per hour!).

My account at does mine for 110 quid a year. It's easy and done and they deal. With any queries I have. They just ask for figures.

We engaged an accountant when we starting renting our house out.

We paid less tax that first year than we did in previous years (when I filed a self assessment due to child benefit high income charge)

All above board... I, like you, just didn’t know what I was doing and overpaid in previous years as a result.

Definitely worth it.

Bloody hell... I pay £450, (although that’s for both me and DH)

Whereabouts roughly are you?

Pleaseaddcaffine · 05/02/2021 19:57

West Midlands. They are the fairm my family have used for a long time. So I know them well but I'm pretty sure that's standard rate that they charge

.. Typo.. Firm

My dad uses an accountant to sort his tax return for rental properties, like others have said it’s well worth the fee because they’ll know how to do it properly and will likely save you money you’d otherwise pay for in mistakes Smile
