Hi everyone im after some advice regarding uc. Im still waiting on our claim processing but theres a few things that will be taken off our entitlment, the advance payment, rent and also i have an overpayment for hmrc. My question is in regards to the hmrc overpayment, is there a certain limit to the amount they can take of uc per month to pay this back or is the sky the limit? Im worried with the rent ( which i didnt need nor want them to pay) and the advance, that the overpayment payments will wipe out our entitlement!

Is your rent going straight to your landlord? there is a limit for HMRC overpayments, sorry I can't remember exactly what it is but if you find it too much you can ask debt management if they can reduce the repayments.

You can phone them and ask them to lower the monthly repayments. If you get it through and it's too much, contact them.
There's a group on fb called universal credit survival which I find very helpful when I have questions. Might be worth a look?

@Babyroobs yes they are paying the rent directly to the landlord for some reason. Not all the rent just a portion of it then ive to pay the rest

Did you not decide that it would go to the landlord? I'm also on UC now and it's only a portion of it (just over 3/5) (their estimate of how much it "should" cost are a laugh!) like you, but I had the choice about whether it went direct or just to me. It was a question that showed up on the 'to do' part near the beginning of the claim (I think in the 5 week period). It won't show up again to be changed, but you could ask them to change it.

I don't see the benefit in general to it going directly to the landlord and in cases where you too are paying some, it makes even less sense than otherwise.
