Glitch on HMRC site???

Notverygrownup · 29/01/2021 22:29

I have just submitted my self assessment, and been given the figure I have to pay.

When I then click on the links for "How to Pay" followed by "Pay now" the screen I am taken to has a different UTR number on - not mine at all - and a much lower figure for how much is owed! It looks as if the link has taken me into someone else's tax bill.

There is a box beneath that which says "Compete and file a tax return for 2019/20". But I just have!! (And to be fair, when I click on that it takes me back to my completed tax return and receipt!!)

Can't work out if it is because I have only just submitted an hour or two ago, or if there is a glitch in the system. Of course, I have to pay by Sunday and will be fined for a late payment if I don't. But if I make a payment against someone else's UTR number I'd hate my money to disappear down a rabbit hole!

Anyone come across anything similar before? Thank youuuuu

Yes I’ve heard there’s been issues today with people submitting then it’s saying they haven’t.

Is there a way to pay from a completely different part of the site to put your own UTR into?

AllTheWayFromLondonDAMN · 29/01/2021 22:37

I don’t know the answer but....You don’t need to pay by Sunday now. You’ve got until 28 Feb now.

Notverygrownup · 29/01/2021 22:40

Don't think so, but I'll try again tomorrow. At least it is saying I have definitely submitted, so I won't get that fine. And I think I remember reading somewhere that they had been told to be lenient this year.

I'll check in again in the morning, to see if the page updates itself overnight. Bit worrying that I get someone else's UTR displayed - Unique Taxpayer Reference! Not so unique then!

Late payment penalty doesn't kick in until a month after filing date. It's just late payment interest until then.

user194729573 · 29/01/2021 22:43

The late filing penalties have been automatically waived this year as long as you file by end of Feb. So you wouldn't have had that penalty either. Wink

This isn't true. You have till 28th Feb to FILE (although it will still technically be late and extend the enquiry window by 3 months). www.gov.uk/government/news/no-self-assessment-late-filing-penalty-for-those-who-file-online-by-28-february Payment is still due by 31st Jan.
Notverygrownup · 29/01/2021 22:44

Actually, I've just found this - so, there is an extension to filing your return if you need one, but no extension on payment! Guess I'll be sitting on the phone next week, along with thousands of others! Agh!

Even if you can’t file your return on time, you still need to pay your tax bill by 31 January – and paradoxically, completing your return is the best way to know how much tax you owe. Interest will be applied to any outstanding balance from 1 February.

Log out of HMRC.

www.tax.service.gov.uk/pay/sign-in?traceId=20960028 and just choose No & go on to payment.

mrsbyers · 29/01/2021 22:50

You usually have to submit then wait 24/48hra for the amount due to appear on your personal tax account then pay from there but if you know the amount you can pay just log in fresh

Could be a scam website? Did you sign in to your Government Gateway etc and get a text message with a number to log in?

When I do mine, I pay by bank transfer to the account number using my tax code as reference. Pretty sure the bank details can be found online.

I think the help lines are open on a Saturday.

Having read that, don't use my link - I could be anyone posting anything. But use HMRC site & find it yourself. Hope all sorted now.

It took me a few times to find the li k to pay.
If you go back into your account get your UTR and how much you owe. And then find the link to pay. It is there but took me a while to find

Nekoness · 31/01/2021 13:32

Be sure to log back in after you pay and make sure you print out the page that has balance owed is 0.00

One year I paid what I was told to early January, but my accountant friend advised me to check back in at end of January just be to sure... sure enough there was like £12 or something owed. Shock. Would have received a penalty for that as apparently it’s down to the individual to double check

Thank you. Sorted now. Some really useful tips on this thread. Smile
