Moving house - need to arrange all new utilities. Help!

Please help! We currently live rurally so our utilities are very specific and we can't change address with them. The only 'normal' supplier is our electricity. We are hoping to move in 3/4 weeks (assuming we actually ever exchange, but that's a whole other thread...) and effectively I need to start from scratch on sourcing new utilities.

We need:
Gas
Electricity
Decent Broadband - we have fibre-to-premises and currently get stupidly fast speeds but we probably only need a 'regular' fibre connection (fibre-to-cabinet I think that is)
TV - we love football/cricket and have BT Sport (from DH's phone deal) and Sky Sports (via NOW TV monthly pass as we can't have a dish where we live). Otherwise we aren't bothered about cinema or entertainment channels, for example, and we're happy with the normal freeview channels.
I assume we need a landline too for broadband(?), which we don't have at the moment.

I'd really appreciate just knowing where to start as it feels pretty overwhelming. I'm happy and able to do all the research but any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've had a brief look at MSE but even the broadband page was a bit Confused and I don't know if it's better to call the main suppliers and see how much things would cost. It's the TV/Phone/BB that I think is most confusing.

I am pretty savvy with money in general and getting good value but in this case I just don't know where to start so would appreciate any help!

The place you are moving into will have a current gas/electricity supplier so you can stay with them or go on comparison websites to see if you can get a better deal. Do you know if the property has cable?

Gas and electricity you need to contact the current property supplier with meter readings taken as soon as you move in. You will open an account with them initially and then you can look to switch. Money Saving Expert energy club is a good place to start.
Landline, broadband, TV generally go together. You've got your pick of who to go with although you might not get Virgin. They all have good and bad points.
Don't forget house insurance too.

Re: meter readings; I advise you to take pictures of the meters with the readings on the day you leave your property and also take the same pictures of the meter readings on the day you move into your new property. This gives you a visual proof of your end readings and start readings for the various gas/electricity providers

Try USwitch or other price comparison website.

Try uswitch, or other comparison website.
The gas an electric will stay with current provider, so you dont need to do thise immediately if you dong way (but you are unlikely to be on a competitive deal).
I also suggest signing up yo somewhere like top cashback. Switching utilities can be very lucrative through them. I generally find what I want, then see if there is an incentive with top cash back.

Thanks all - this is helpful. I have checked the gas/elec/phone but cable is blank. I'll try to find out about the vendors' current broadband and any TV package they have.

@delilahbucket I've got insurance etc on my other very long list of things to sort/companies to tell about change of address but thanks!

So landline/broadband/TV - any idea whether it is better to bundle these or go with separate providers?

Landline and broadband have to go together and you can often get TV at a reduced price with them. We actually got rid of our TV service and just have Freeview with Netflix.

Sparticle · 22/01/2021 18:20

Yes at the moment we watch everything through our TV; freeview, disney+, prime and iplayer etc. I suppose it's the sports channels that make it more difficult and I am hoping it will be cheaper to get a TV deal than spend more on a Now TV monthly pass but it's this sort of thing I need to look into.

Thanks again, this is really useful.
