Civil service maternity pay

I have been a civil servant for more than five years. In August, I interviewed for and was offered a new role in another civil service department on promotion. However, due to a series of delays on the part of the recruiting team, I am still waiting for a start date and contract. I have recently discovered that I am pregnant and the baby is due in July. I know that there is continuity of service when transferring between government departments but can anyone confirm whether I will be entitled to the full 26 weeks' maternity pay if I transfer departments whilst pregnant? I am not likely to start the new role before the end of February.

Yes you will still be entitled!

That's a relief, thank you!

employment is by her majesty's government not by department so your continuity of service transfers between all departments

Hi jumping on this thread. I’m in a similar situation as @rumpusboo only difference is I’ve been in CS for 4 months (still on probation) and today got offered another role in another CS department. Baby isn’t due till august so I would have completed the 26 weeks before baby was born whilst in my current department.

However if I shift, the same rule of continuous employment applies right?

Does anyone know if I would have to start probation again? By the time I move I would have finished 5 months and just short by 1 month probation.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Smile

Hi @Whatshouldbemyusername, you won't need to start probation again. Hopefully, I'll get to start the new role very soon as it'll be really awkward taking off a couple of months after starting a new role!

Thanks @rumpusboo and good luck!! I have come to a point where I cba. My manager is the worst!

Despite still being on probation and moving within the CS - I should be classed as continuously employed right and get my maternity benefits too?

Dinosauraddict · 27/01/2021 19:38

So the probation question is actually not as clear cut as Pp indicates. If you move before you pass probation then some departments will restart it, others won't. But yes you still keep continuous service.

@Dinosauraddict thanks for the clarification.

I have emailed HR and the new department for clarification but it takes ages to get a response.

I appreciate the help!

You keep continuous service. Some departments actually offer more than 26 weeks on full pay. It's a good career if you want to go on mat leave.

Whatshouldbemyusername · 27/01/2021 22:29

@sunlightbuttons that’s great. Yes it’s definitely better than so many other places out there.

rumpusboo · 27/01/2021 23:40

Thanks @Whatshouldbemyusername. Please let me know what HR says.
