i have just lent someone £250 the last of the money in my account. there is no way they can pay it back yet. it was lent on the understanding they could pay be back £20 a week starting after xmas. i thought it would be ok cos i have my overdraft and then i get paid this week. only now i've just found out my boss has stopped all overtime which i had got used to just being my hours iyswim cos i've been doing it so long. how am i going to survive on £49 a week? and to top it all the restaurant i work in is being closed for refurbishment in 2 weeks and not reopening til the 12th december. so until the 12th december i'm going to have less than £100.

Can you get another job? There are always plenty around if you're desperate and not too fussy and it doesn't have to be permanent

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 12:43

oooh good idea why didn't i think of that. the only problem is i can only do specific hours cos my mum works too and i had worked my shifts around hers.

If it's only going to be temporary people are a lot more inclined to help out when they can. Us e favours owed!
Have you considered working nights? I work nights and it means i can put the kids to bed at mums/ sisters house then be back in time to sort them out in the morning and sleep whilst they're at school.

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 12:50

i work nights already but can only work certain nights cos my mum works all day wed-fri and she goes out sat nights so can't have him then. i had been doing sun, mon, tue night and sat day.

also most temp jobs now are going to be for xmas which is no good to me cos i will have to go back to my old job 12th december.

Try local supermarket. They always seem to need people overnight cos people don't like it! Hopefully they'll be desperate enough so you can tell them what nights you can do and you should be able to start soon.

jennypenguin · 28/10/2007 12:54

And don't tell them you only want temp work!

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 12:56

but don't you have to give 4 weeks notice you are leaving and i don't need work for much longer than that.

OP posts:
jennypenguin · 28/10/2007 12:57

you'll probably get a probationary period with a much shorter notice.

jennypenguin · 28/10/2007 12:58

Also, often start a job before you sign a contract and if you haven't signed anything there's nothing they can do!

ArmadilloDaMan · 28/10/2007 13:08

in a temp/probabtionary period job the notice period is usually 1 week.

Try local shops/supermarkets - they usually have jobs now as they are very busy preparing for the christmas period.

Also see if you can sign up for any temping agencies. You might get bits of work here and there and the pay is usually good for tempingwork.

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 13:15

do you have a probationary period in shops, supermarkets etc??

i work in a restaurant and i'm sure all new employees are taken on as permanent employees straight away.

OP posts:
ArmadilloDaMan · 28/10/2007 13:17

yep.

Often supermarkets/shops ime take on temp workers over christmas, even if they are looking fro perm staff in long run. Then anyone they like they offer a permanent position to after christmas.

Discount is good for temp staff in shops (though I know this isn't really the issue here).

ArmadilloDaMan · 28/10/2007 13:18

Even usually getting taken on perm you would have a probabtionary period.

I think in law you don't get the full range of worker's rights until you have been employed somewhere for 12 months.

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 13:23

right so i could take on a xmas temp job, then the first week in nov i would be perfectly within my rights to hand in my notice?

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 13:23

oops forgot to finish my sentence and i meant the first week in december ..

.... and be able to go back to my normal job on the 12th december.

OP posts:
ArmadilloDaMan · 28/10/2007 13:26

yep. NOThing they could do to stop you (and it wouldn't be an unusual situation).

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 13:32

right i shall get looking. i hope my inflexibility isn't too much of a problem.

doublethelovedoublethekisses · 28/10/2007 13:34

there is a 12 week probationary period in the supermarket I work for and the notice period required during that time is only 1 week... even if others differ you won't be there long enough to accrue any major benefits so you won't lose anything if you simply tell them you're not going back!

jennypenguin · 29/10/2007 06:11

good luck on your job huntingx
