Scammed by HSBC fake text

I've been scammed tonight by have text asking me to confirm if a new payee was set up by me. They payee in msg wasn't so I clicked link, logged in online through secure key online and followed instructions to cancel the payee and the payment. I was sure I'd just stopped fraud. Moments later I got msg to say I was in overdraft. Knew then I'd been scammed. Called bank and they said 4 payments had been sent out of my account totalling £1460. They've now suspended my net banking. It's weekend so fraud team not in and it will be out of hours fraud team who will look at it. The person I spoke to couldn't guarantee I'd get my money back as hasn't spoken to fraud directly to confirm but said they'd start an investigation. When I called action fraud to report formally they also said the bank sometimes can get it back, sometimes they can't. I thought they'd have to protect my money anyway and get me my funds back. I'm beside myself now that they might not be able to as arghhh. Wondering what other people experience is.

There's a scam going round atm with emails pretending to be EE Mobile, saying there's an issue with your bill. I almost entered my details but then realised (moment of inattention). Look out for those as well everyone. Always make sure to go to your account separately (i.e. not through any links) and check. I think phishing has increased massively since covid started.

bachsingingmum · 13/01/2021 17:25

I believe there are some helpful new rules, or a new code that banks have signed up to in relation to fraud on individuals' accounts. Worth googling it. And yes, banks do need to up their game. The money came out of your account (whether you were careless or not) into an account that a fraudster managed to set up, and invariably thence to another account. Did they not ID that fraudster properly? Can they not trace the cash and find out who is behind the scam. It's a disgrace.

Damnpeskykids · 13/01/2021 17:30

Oh OP so pleased you're getting your £ back! I had the same text from "HSBC" yesterday, as well as an error with my phone bill from O2 & EE. Luckily I don't bank with them or have my phone contract with either so luckily knew it was a scam. Absolute cretins!

MedusasBadHairDay · 13/01/2021 17:31

I had a text yesterday claiming to be from the DVLA and that I was due a refund on my car tax, with a link to click to claim it back. Clearly a scam, but I did think it was a shame that there was no way to report the text as scammers like you can with phone calls.

RavingAnnie · 13/01/2021 17:48

My bank require that all payments to new sources you have to put in a code generated via your bank card and a card reader. Neither of which a fraudster is likely to have.

So even if I gave all my log on details to a fraudster they still shouldn't be able to transfer any money to a new bank account.

So banks who aren't doing this could be doing more.

bobbojobbo · 16/01/2021 15:05

The banks really need to up their game with this type of fraud. It causes so much stress and worry.

It's really not the banks fault. I find it amazing that anyone could click on a link in an unsolicited text and give their banking details away...surely everyone knows by now never to click on links like that? It's not like you could never have heard of these scams, the warnings are everywhere and constant.
I'm happy people have got their money back, but lets have some personal responsibility as well.

pippapoo62 · 19/05/2021 16:54

Just had this text myself by a HSBC message . It says you have authorised a payment of £240.00 to Mr C jones . If this is not you go to this link to cancel. DO NOT GO TO THIS LINK . DELETE

pippapoo62 · 19/05/2021 17:10

I am aware this is an old thread but as i have had this scam today and thought it was appropriate to post

Pixie2015 · 19/05/2021 21:04

I got text today as well mine was Mr White! My husband got it last week.

I had the post office one too about postage owed!

They can look so convincing!

grannycake · 20/05/2021 08:45

Several of these recently - for Nat West, Santandert and HSBC. Another one to watch out for is delivery charge scams texts from hermes, dpd and royal mail

Atalantea · 20/05/2021 08:53

@IDoAllMyOwnStunts

I’ve had the same a few months ago. From someone purporting to be NatWest. I was so hopeful I’d get my money back but NATWEST refused and said I’d not took appropriate measures to protect my account and was partly to blame.

I’m now going through the Financial Ombudsman to complain and try to get the decision reversed.

Without meaning to be unsympathetic, which this will sound, why should the bank pay you back for the money you gave away? Sure if they can recover it they should, but you clicked on the link, you entered your details?

Yes it is completely shit that these arseholes do this, but we are bombarded with "don't click on links you are sent" etc, every message I get from the bank is don't give away your personal info, phone the number on your card etc?

Forestiere · 20/05/2021 09:07

Slightly different but I got an email telling me my recent blood tests showed a problem with my white blood cells, which the email said meant I had cancer.

I was hysterical - I have health anxiety anyway - and I immediately phoned my GP. They suggested I double checked the email (they were very nice,) it was only then that I realised it didn't have my name, address or any personal info on, and that it was a hoax. It was just a coincidence that I'd recently been for blood tests.

There are some really nasty people out there... Be careful everyone.

scorpio32 · 20/05/2021 09:29

I think it's time for banks to stop using text messages and emails completely, and to be very public about it. ALL banks. Neither of these methods of communication are in any way secure, and the ease of providing fake sender details is what makes these messages so convincing.

Communication should only be through a secure app, either on your phone or PC.

This would stop this kind of scam in a stroke.

Until they do this I don't think they have a leg to stand on when it comes to refusing refunds

Fruityfriday · 20/05/2021 14:29

@Forestiere that's awful, the cruel fucking twats x

pippapoo62 · 26/05/2021 10:07

New message to my mobile today,I don't shop at Lidl but many do, I believe this is a scam

PetuniaK · 28/05/2021 21:44

I fell for a ridiculous WhatsApp scam recently as I wasn’t concentrating when I received the message. It’s easy do, but it’s not the bank’s fault you gave away your details. They can’t afford to reimburse every customer that falls for these scams

ChrissyPlummer · 29/05/2021 14:51

I’m all for personal responsibility but as pp said the banks have allowed someone to set up an account without doing ID checks. How? I’ve had problems with this in the past as I didn’t have any bills in my name and most banks won’t accept mobile phone bills. So how have the fraudsters managed to do it and the bank’s seemingly unable to trace and recover it?

shazzz1xx · 10/08/2021 22:34

Did you get your money back? also did you have your baby yet ? x 💐

albairlanda · 19/11/2021 13:53

@shazzz1xx I did get my money back - all of it! Bank took responsibility because transfer was done on a PC and I've only ever banked on a mobile or iPad. Should've flagged as fraud they said.

And you're so kind. I've had my baby boy too. He's four months now.

Dindundundundeeer · 21/11/2021 12:18

I got a call from my bank about a fraud transaction. The only reason I knew it was fraud itself was because my bank never calls about fraud, it just declines the transaction.

No bank needs your help to stop fraud.

lovemyflipflops · 21/11/2021 15:20

There is so much awareness about this - I don't trust ANYTHING - really sorry this has happened OP.
Phishing emails and texts are abundant - don't click on any link

Alwayswonderedwhy · 21/11/2021 15:24

I hope you get your money back but it's common knowledge not to click on links and always go directly to the website.

albairlanda · 22/11/2021 09:25

Don't worry the original post is almost a year old. Got every penny back phew
