Excessive gas usage overnight

Just got up and saw we have used 8kw gas over night according to the smart metre - however, heating is set to the lower temperature and no hot water used overnight.
How is this possible? Should I get the boiler looked at?
Our smart metre doesn't give us a running cost, just volume totals, something to do with needing an update of the smart metre which our energy provider told us was delayed last summer due to covid.
I know I need to chase this up which I will Monday, but how can we be using so much gas overnight?

Leak?

Do you have a daily standard charge? Could it be that?

StrawberriCream · 03/01/2021 08:53

Change the temperature down another degree at night and see if it makes a difference

Cabincrewclare · 04/01/2021 00:13

Is it just the meter playing catch up? As in the readings aren’t live?

I am cabin crew and away a lot, hubby works away from time to time too, even when both away and the house empty with nothing has wise left on we often get readings for approx 12-24 hours

What kind of hot water system do you have? If it has a storage cylinder, then when the hot water is on the boiler will be working to keep the cylinder hot even when you're not using any water.

And how low is "the lower temperature" the heating is set to? Unless you're only talking a few C to stop the pipes freezing, the heating will be running during the night.

FlowerPig · 04/01/2021 06:46

Again this morning, 7kw used.

It's a combi boiler, no storage tank. We only had it installed last summer so not had this before - unless I've just not noticed. I think it's the Ideal Vogue 40 model we have.

Thermostat is set to 15 over night and the house is still showing to be at 18 this morning so it shouldn't have come on through the night, should it?

It will have come on overnight. It is so cold outside that to maintain inside temp of 15-18’c it will have been on all night.

Ours is set at 12 overnight and came on last night.

Check the actual meter, not the smart meter too.

Ours is set at 16 degrees overnight in a new build and still clicks on as the bloody thermostat is next to the front door In the coldest place in the house!

Lucky you! Ours is in the warmest part of the house, worst positioning ever
Lovelydovey · 04/01/2021 12:47

Do you not have a timer for your heating as well as a thermostat? Ours is only on for a few hours in the morning and evening and even then only if the thermostat says it is cold enough. We’re very unlikely to get to a temperature overnight where pipes freeze etc if the house was warm in the evening.

FlowerPig · 04/01/2021 13:21

As far as I'm aware the heating didn't come on overnight. The thermostat being set to 15 means it only comes on if the temperature drops below 15, which it definitely didn't as it was still at 18 in the morning, if it had dropped it would have shown temperature 15 that it had been maintained at.

I'm wondering if it is a temperature thing as it's only recently gotten so cold and something I've noticed recently, but then I have got a 9 week old baby so haven't really been paying much notice to the metre.

We are only up to 10kw for the day now after my partners shower this morning so at least it's not an all day thing but I'm still curious what's happening at night.....if he's only used 3kw for a shower that 7kw is something significant. I know it's only 15p per kw but it adds up over the month/year!

Wondering if it's what a PP said about a delay on it updating the smart metre but it seems to run in real time the rest of the day so I don't think it's that either?
