Refund but gave wrong card details

Hi, hoping someone can help.

I requested a refund for something but have accidentally typed the wrong last 4 digits of the card number arghh.

I have spoken to the retailer who said to get in touch with my bank but is this correct? Presumably the wrong card number I've put could belong to any bank account so how would getting in touch with my bank help? I assumed the retailer would just be able to cancel the refund!

Any help appreciated

Sorry OP but I think this one is on you. An easy mistake to make, but it is your responsibility to ensure you have provided the correct card details. The retailer have acted on your instruction so I think you will need to raise this with your bank. I'm in no way an expert and this is just my opinion, but I would imagine that there is two outcomes.

  1. The card number doesn't exist or the other details you entered don't match the card so the payment will fail and be returned to the retailer.
  1. If the card exists then the owner of the account will need to raise it with the bank themselves.

I'm not even sure the bank will confirm to you that it is an existing debit card number. I also imagine the retailer will only reissue the refund if/when the payment is returned otherwise they would be out of pocket. I would think speaking to your bank for advice is the next step but I dont think the retailer have any responsibility to step in here until the incorrect payment is returned.

I hope you get a quick resolution.

The first few digits of a card identify the bank, so if you've mixed up the last digits, your bank is the most likely to be able to trace the money.
Good luck!

I’ve spoken to the bank who said they couldn’t do anything as it was the retailer who was issuing the refund and not them. I’ve sent an email to the accounts department of the retailer as that was what was advised if I didn’t get anywhere with my bank.
I just hope the card details don’t exist and it will all bounce back!
I am so annoyed with myself for getting the digits wrong, I had only just requested another refund a minute earlier and all went through okay for that one. Arghhh
Thanks for the replies though.

Something doesn't quite make sense here... Was it a v small, independent retailer (who might not have a v technical set up)?

Money laundering rules mean that card refunds need to go onto the card the payment was made from. Most retailers' systems will not be able to accept an alternative card for the refund. If you're buying from somewhere that doesn't have a set-up to that allows this, then at the very least they should be checking that you're using the same card - card details are printed on the receipt, and they would usually use the last 4 digits to check it's the same card.

@ReviewingTheSituation it was from a football club, so I was getting the refund for the season ticket. But it was on my dads account and he never had a card details saved because we normally pay by direct debit but the monthly payments come from my bank account...so I had to type the details in for the refund and it could have been any card as he never had one saved on his online account and I’ve now mistyped the last four card digits. I’ve rang the club again and the lady at the ticket office said she would chase up the accounts department. Not sure I’ll be getting the money back tbh if it’s landed in someone else account
