How much do you spend on Christmas, all in?

Just wondering as growing up we didn't have much, so didn't spend much. Now I am a bit more financially comfortable and we have a budget of £750 this year - that's for absolutely everything (tree, food, booze, gifts, treats, activities...). It feels like a LOT but then I read on here about some peoples traditions (Christmas Eve hampers with new games, treats and pj's for whole family), and very impressive gift lists for the kids etc.. sounds lovely but it's kind of blowing my mind, doing the mental math, they must be spending thousands??

Just curious, obviously look away if you prefer not to talk money! :)

I worked this out today after splurging in M&S food hall and feeling guilty on the drive home. This year we would have spent around £1300 all in.

stoneysongs · 02/12/2020 17:54

I usually spend around £1000

Smallsteps88 · 02/12/2020 17:58

This year I’m aiming to keep it under £300. £350 max. Because I’ve not been working for half the year. Normal years usually about £500.

TotoroPotoro · 02/12/2020 17:58

Oh good grief I'm not sure I want to know. £250 on kids presents (total), £50 on DH, ~£100 on obligatory present to myself, few hundred on food....I'm gonna say about £600

That's excluding kids xmas jumpers and PJs though, so probably £650 all in

I've not included the £££ spent on xmas tat in Home Bargains tho

Smallsteps88 · 02/12/2020 17:59

Actually doing a quick tot in my head it’s looking like it will be closer to £350. I have two DC but we eat dinner with my parents and have no Christmas food costs.

stairway · 02/12/2020 18:05

£350 mainly presents for family. I’m working Xmas day so will recoup some of that anyway. We will be having some kind of frozen Lidl nut roast when I get back from work and some frozen party food the next day. We don’t officially celebrate Xmas though although culturally it’s important to me.

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 02/12/2020 18:55

My DS £500 plus £100 stocking, My DD £300 plus £50, my DD BF £300 plus £50. Nieces and nephews x 6 £400. Parents and in laws £200. Charity gifts for children £500. DH- £20 in stocking. Dog and DDs dog 350 . No other gifts dont gift to adults.

Usually food and drink C £1000, this year probably £500

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 02/12/2020 18:58

The dogs are £50 not 350!

DragonMamma · 02/12/2020 19:00

I would say about £1500 most years. This year we are staying away so that’s another £600 on top.

carlaCox · 02/12/2020 19:02

Probably about £150-£200 (no kids and will be having xmas dinner at the parents').

StylishMummy · 02/12/2020 19:09

Probably £2kish,

£300ish on decorations (we buy more each year to add to the existing - so the house gets more festive each year)

£300-400 on pre Christmas activities (some have been cancelled this year)

£500 on food and booze inc New Year's Eve etc

£800-1k on gifts

We can cut back HUGELY if we wanted to- I did DD1s first Christmas on a shoestring and it was lovely, but we're comfortably able to afford that amount so we spend it. Can make it 1/20th if needs be.

Oblomov20 · 02/12/2020 19:09

We don't spend that much on ds's presents. We just don't. Some people seem to spend a fortune.

cherrypiepie · 02/12/2020 19:09

Too Much really. £700 in Starling space plus £240 that we save each month as cash in a jar. Including extra clothes, meals out work drinks, work lunches etc secret Santa presents for helpful work colleagues. And a sale treat or two for me. That's for two adults with no children and a small family. However I love food and drink and DH always wants an expensive gift! I was always hit with a big credit card bill in January so now this doesn't happen and I can start the year in the black! I still have 132.21p in the starling space from last year! So it just rolls over.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 02/12/2020 19:14

We do spend a few thousand and a lot of that is on the kids presents. Then family/friends presents and food.

kittykat35 · 02/12/2020 19:16

So far I have spent nearly 550 and I have a few more things to get and some food shopping. So probably around 800-900.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 02/12/2020 19:17

About the same as you, probably.
£500 on presents for the DCs and DH and I, about another £150 on family gifts. £100 on food and drink on top of what would normally be spent in a week. Maybe a touch more here or there, but around £750/800.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 02/12/2020 19:18

About £1000 I'd say. Basically my November's wage (and a bit on top) it's Christmas money.Grin

Mylittleturkeysandwich · 02/12/2020 19:18

I feel a bit of a Scrooge tbh. I've spent so far about £50 on Christmas clothes for us all. I'll spend about £100 on gifts for everyone and another £100 on DS. This year he's getting clothes, he's only 1, just had a birthday and doesn't need anything else. We're having Christmas dinner at my mums so don't need to pay for that. Me and DH aren't doing gifts this year to save some money so that's it really.

CherryPavlova · 02/12/2020 19:19

Would depend what counted and whether presents that were also essential items counted.
It also depends whether you include things like new outfits or Alcohol for drinks party and New Year.
It certainly adds up.

SpamIAm · 02/12/2020 19:20

I only actually track spending on presents, that's normally just shy of a grand. This year we've bought outdoor lights, so a fair bit spent there that we wouldn't normally spend. We don't do Christmas dinner but obviously take a few dishes, and we're well stocked on cheeselets and chocolate. Love a few novelty outfits for the kids.

All in maybe £1500?

Desmondo2016 · 02/12/2020 19:22

Probably around 1500

Kljnmw3459 · 02/12/2020 19:26

About £450 in total. That includes the food, presents, tree, treats.

Daisy829 · 02/12/2020 19:27

Inc presents and food probs around £1500 although this year we’ve treated ourselves to a new tree & lights on top of that so all in probs about £2k. It’s a lot really. Each year I’ll say we will spend less but I love Christmas and get carried away (but fortunately not into debt)

CuteOrangeElephant · 02/12/2020 19:28

70 quid on all new decorations and lights (international move)
30 on a tree
30 on DDs presents
No more than 70 pounds on food and drink.

So about 200 pounds.

NeonIcedcoffee · 02/12/2020 19:32

I'm not sure I know. I could probably work out presents easily. Then I remember food from last year from the big shop that was £300 in sainsburys, but the there's loads of extras which I build up.

Normally when we're allowed out we'd do things like see some Christmas performances or events. Or an outdoor light show thing which we do anyway but probably more of in the run up to Christmas then maybe a trip to London. As we used to live there and I miss it loads at this time of year. So if I include this stuff it would add several hundred pounds. But it's more leisure than strictly Christmas. The tree is normal from ikea so under 30 quid with a voucher back too!

I think it massively depends on budget and who you buy for or host.
