Gas and Electricity cost

I recently had a smart meter fitted and am slightly obsessed with how much gas and electricity I am using each day. It's not helping that I'm currently at home all day self-isolating and paranoid that my bills are going to rocket as its so cold I keep ramping the heating up..

So my question is, how much roughly do people spend on gas and electricity? I know tariffs are different for everyone I was just looking at approximate estimates!

I personally don't really understand where my electricity usage goes.

It's gone up a bit this year - but I got a hot tub this summer, and am working at home plus kids schooling at home in the spring and yr13 on week in / week out since September. So that's understandable.

But I've used about 4,000kwh pa for years, which according to websites is high.

Heating is oil fired.
Very rarely use the tumble drier.
Showers feed off the oil fired boiler.

Oven is electric (no gas supply), but other than that it's appliances (washing machine say 4 times a week, dishwasher 5 times a week, fridge & fridge-freezer), gadgets, lights etc. Not what I'd class as high usage.

I think fridges and freezers can use quite a bit. We have a separate tall fridge and freezer. Must use a quite a bit to keep the whole freezer at -18⁰C

Agreed, but also pretty standard across households no? And therefore wouldn't explain high usage by comparison.

Mine is bigger than some. I'm trying to explain my high consumption Grin. 4 people having showers daily doesn't help and if I do an exercise class I will shower again

I pay £55.00 in total per month for Gas & Electric, with Bulb.

I give a meter reading on the 1st of every month to make it is accurate.

I have a code if anyone wants £50 to join them.

I have been home 7 days a week since March, it has gone up about £3 since Sept.
There is only me & 1 DC though.

My water bill however has gone up from £30 to £45 Hmm

Chasingsquirrels · 03/12/2020 14:54

See I don't think yours is even that high dementedpixie!
Your screenshot shows 500kwh for a 2 month period = approx 3,000kwh pa. Including your larger than average fridge & freezer and daily showers for 4 people?
Mine is 4,000kwh pa. With I'd say a standard size fridge freezer plus separate under counter fridge, and showers running off the oil fired boiler rather than electric.

Chasingsquirrels · 03/12/2020 14:55

Oh I take that back, it's 500kwh for 1 month not 2, so 6,000kwh pa.

£95 dual fuel, 4 bed semi, 2 adults and 2 teens. Somebody at home most of the day. We usually have the thermostat set to about 18.5 degrees.

changeoflife · 03/12/2020 21:14

Its interesting to read these. I'm in a 5 bed house, fairly modern and paying around £90 pm dual fuel direct debit. Since having the smart meter I've become obsessed watching it tick up over the course of the day, especially being at home this last week self-isolating with my daughter.

The smart meter is showing about £5 per day for both gas and electricity combined and I just wondered if that was high or not.

I think I might need to get our electricity meter checked. Admittedly it’s for both our house and my parent annex (one wfh) but we spend close to £300 pcm for gas and electricity.

It shows 50kWh per day for electricity!!

Bluebellbike · 03/12/2020 21:26

£32 per month Dual Fuel with Bulb. I have solar panels which reduce my Electricity bill. I live alone in a smallish 3 bed semi.

tortoiseshell1985 · 03/12/2020 21:27

About 80 quid a month for both, 3 bed detached 2 adults
Won't have a smart meter

Bluebellbike · 03/12/2020 21:28

I also have a multi-fuel burner which I often light if I'm just sitting in the lounge at night rather than putting the heating on. I pay around £50 per year for smokeless fuel for the burner. The wood I burn is free as I store it when I have my oak tree pruned.

chickenyhead · 03/12/2020 21:31

In the summer about £80 ppm dual fuel, increasing to around £140 ppm between December and February.

Thecazelets · 03/12/2020 21:42

We pay £165 per month for dual gas/elec. 5 bed period detached house. Usage is much lower in summer ( about £50 a month) but we pay the same all year round to even it out. I'm expecting it to go up this winter as dh and I both wfh and I refuse to be cold inside, especially as haven't been on holiday, can't go out anywhere etc.
