Tax Credit debt on old "joint claim". Anyone in similar position??

Ok, so about 4 years ago when living with my ex husband we ending up making more income than expected, leading to an overpayment on our joint WTC and CTC claims. He was doing a lot of ad-hoc overtime during the period in question.
Long story short, we split about 3 years ago and I notified HMRC and all the other relavant authorities that I'm now single. He was removed from the UK by the Home Office (I won't go into the reasons why, but it's all checkable if HMRC wanted to confirm this).
Last year I got a letter saying there's an overpayment debt from our old joint claim (in both names) so I called them straight away and explained that he's left the UK and is likely to be untracable but that I'd be happy to set up a direct debit to pay MY share of the share.
2 different advisors on the helpline confirmed that with it being from a joint claim, I'm only liable for HALF (although the letter was address solely to me). I set up a plan to pay my half back to them but I kept getting letters showing the total debt as the figure including HIS half as well as the remaining balance on MY half (with is almost cleared).
I asked them that if I'm only liable for HALF the debt, why keep sending me letters for the FULL amount? They said the letters are "automatic" and "system genarated", "can't be stopped".
I called yesterday and said what should I do about the letters which keep coming to ME (no mention of HIS name on them!).. The TC advisors on the helpline just say "ignore them" or "don't worry, you're not liable for his half..." or "if debt collectors contact you just explain this to them..."... They seems so blasse.... I don't WANT debt collectors or bailiffs etc contacting me. I live alone with a young child and I'm already nearly finished paying MY half, so don't know why they can't put a stop to these letters. They say it's because my ex's half is still "outstanding", but this will ALWAYS be the case. He was deported to a country with a non-existant postal system, unreliable phonelines etc, and I don't even KNOW his forwarding details so I can't even offer them to HMRC.
Anyone been in this situation?
