Letter from HMRC re Child Tax Credit

I wonder if someone has any up to date information on this? I have looked at previous posts but they were years old.

I have received a letter asking if I am sure that I am single?! I haven't had a relationship in 11 years!

Might someone have tried to cause trouble for me (can only think of one shitty neighbour) or are they generic letters?

I've tried to call them but after half an hour my battery died on my phone.

Any help with this would be appreciated as I'm a bit concerned tbh.

Thanks

I got the same this week. I'm sure it says we can ignore it.

I've been a single as a nun for a decade.

megletthesecond · 24/11/2020 16:12

I'm sure they're generic.

RoundAndRoundAgainAndAgain · 24/11/2020 16:13

Definitely a generic letter. I got one and I know of a friend who also received it. I wouldn't worry I think they are just trying it in the hope that some might cancel.
I wouldn't even call them, it says if you are sure not to call them?

Guardsman18 · 24/11/2020 16:25

I feel a bit happier now reading your posts. It's a strange letter isn't it?

It implies that they know I have a partner living here and that they are giving me the opportunity to 'come clean'.

I was just concerned that they would stop any money (I'm not working at the moment due to Covid) and that I would have to somehow prove that I live a nun's life - as pp said.

It's like a phishing letter but from a legitimate source. There have been a few similar threads so they must send them out in batches every so often

megletthesecond · 24/11/2020 16:28

It did make me laugh. Maybe I do have a partner here and am too dopey to notice. Maybe he's under the laundry pile...

dementedpixie · 24/11/2020 16:28

Does it not say to ignore the letter if you have no extra info for them?

HopeAndDriftWood · 24/11/2020 16:31

They send them out in batches. It’s worded like that to “encourage” anyone who has forgotten to update them to do so. A friend got one years ago so I looked it up - they did seem to prompt contact, so I guess they work!

Ignore it if you have no changes.

Guardsman18 · 24/11/2020 16:43

That made chuckle @megletthesecond! Haven't done a lot of that today.

I appreciate that they say I can ignore it, which I will, but I felt the tone of it was accusing if that makes sense. I would then have to prove that I live with my sons.

When we split up, 11 years ago, my JSA or income support or whatever was stopped whilst they investigated the £100000 + I had in my account. I didn't even see it. Marital home gets sold, ex got his part and solicitor gave mine to my sellers. I had to send documentation to prove that a house had been bought for me and my dcs.

I was just worrying but feel better now.

I got one too. First time I received one was about 3 years ago and I was livid. I found out its just generic and can be ignored.
So when one came through the door the other day I laughed and said out loud, yes, I didn't think I'd be still single too

Guardsman18 · 25/11/2020 08:24

Perhaps that's what it is Spidey - they have us all flagged up as they can't believe we're still single after all this time!
