Husband being made redundant

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 16/11/2020 05:46

My husband is a Chef. He has been put on notice of redundancy. He finds out on Friday. If he loses his job we will be £1100 short on our bills every month. I feel sick, and very stressed.

If my business completes (I work in property) then I get commission but its the wrong time of year and covid so I'm frightened we're going to struggle hugely.

Plus he has 3 children he supports and I don't want that contribution to stop, but it is significant and I don't know how I'm going to cover that, our mortgage, all the bills and eat 😭

He has already started applying for jobs (he was told Friday, and started applying Friday) but who knows what will happen in a covid Christmas.

Think I just need someone to tell me it'll be ok and to breath.

I agree with you, but so many people act otherwise.

@blisstwins 100%

@letsnotscaretheneighbours how's things now?

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 18/11/2020 11:57

@Alittlebitofthis he has had several interviews booked in this week, so hopefully something will come of it. I've cleansed my budget and before we make a decision on what we have to do about child support we're waiting on him finding out about a possible offer.

@Alittlebitofthis hope you're ok. Sorry was a quick reply earlier. Been busy with work.

The jobs he has applied for are kitchen assistant in nursing home, that kind of thing. Half his previous salary but much better work life balance and it will make ends meet.

How are things your end?

Will he qualify for redundancy pay and pilon? That might tied you over until NY. Also any agency work if hospitality reopens in next few weeks.

Alittlebitofthis · 18/11/2020 17:00

@letsnotscaretheneighbours I don't know how I feel to be honest. I'm so angry with him for getting us into so much debt. It would have been tight with him being made redundant let alone giving us so much debt. I feel like selling the house and separating. We've got holidays or things on hold just now which is a relief.

I really hope your husband gets offered one of the jobs. My husband has gone off sick with depression which means the mortgage gets paid mean time.

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 18/11/2020 17:13

@Alittlebitofthis the mortgage being paid is at least something, but I completely understand the stress that the debt places on you because its just an additional layer you don't need. Plus the hiding of it would draw me to the same conclusion.
@Sunshinegirl82 I've got a meeting with my boss and compliance today so I will double check but I think it'll show on the credit file as mortgage arrears.
I'm sure mortgage holidays don't show on your credit file. Please check with the bank.

Ariela · 18/11/2020 18:14

Is there any reason his current employers cannot furlough him for 80% of the salary?

Alittlebitofthis · 18/11/2020 18:30

@letsnotscaretheneighbours we've went through everything. The loans alone are £800 a month. The police have put it through to fraud. Although they have said even if does come through as fraud there's little chance of getting the money back. He's applying just for other jobs.

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 18/11/2020 18:42

@Ariela they are making the job redundant so won't. The business was taken over by a company early this year and they are looking at reducing kitchen hours. He is the most expensive.

@Alittlebitofthis soul destroying. Will keep your fingers crossed

Furlough isn't free for employers - the system keeps changing but they currently would have to pay NI and pension payments.

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 19/11/2020 16:38

Definitely being made redundant on Monday. Gets his redundancy package stuff then because technically its a months notice - not expected to work redundancy.

Alittlebitofthis · 19/11/2020 16:43

@letsnotscaretheneighbours sorry to hear that. Fingers crossed he gets offered a job soon.

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 19/11/2020 16:46

@Alittlebitofthis thank you. Think I need to seriously strip back the budget now.

Definitely need to breath! I feel that panic rising again.

OP posts:
Alittlebitofthis · 19/11/2020 17:44

@letsnotscaretheneighbours it's horrible, isn't it? I feel fine for a while then the panic sets in! I'm back to work tonight for a couple of shifts so at least I will get away for a while

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 19/11/2020 17:48

Yes it is horrible this roller coaster of emotions. Hopefully Monday goes well and he gets this job. I mean I now know I can afford the bills January on my own so whatever his package is will be extra but doesn't make me feel better because I'm a planner.

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 20/11/2020 11:34

@Alittlebitofthis had a bit of a sob this morning, and then he received a text saying his DBS is being done and they are referencing him for the job he has to shadow shift next week, so hoping they offer it to him. My nerves are shot.

Wish I could help you. Such a rubbish time.

madcatladyforever · 20/11/2020 11:38

Its not your job to support his children, if he has lost his job the state will support them. Not meaning to be harsh but this is a fact.

VanCleefArpels · 20/11/2020 12:33

Lots of great advice here. One thing that occurs to me is that where I live (prosperous commuter belt) chefs/caterers doing home dinner parties is a booming business model (so much so I struggled to find someone for my forthcoming birthday!) especially while restaurants are closed. I wonder if that might be a possible side hustle for him?

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 20/11/2020 17:14

@VanCleefArpels mentioned it to him. He is going to have a chat with (whoever he said) to talk about health and safety regs, etc

OP posts:
letsnotscaretheneighbours · 23/11/2020 13:59

@Alittlebitofthis how are you feeling? My husband has been offered 2 jobs now. Both the same money (15k drop) but its money coming in.

OP posts:
Alittlebitofthis · 23/11/2020 22:30

@letsnotscaretheneighbours I'm feeling better than I was last week. I think it's helped being back at work. He's off sick so can't apply for anything. I'm applying for a job tomorrow as what I do now was bank work for the nhs so no pay if I'm off sick.
2 job offers is great! Even at that much of a drop. That's the hardest thing for me. If he'd been made redundant then we'd have managed with him getting a new job with less money. But because of the huge debt he's taken out, it's like something hanging over my head! I need to do what's best for our son and to a degree myself. Because he wasn't thinking of us when he got himself into this mess.
