Someone used my debit card!

I noticed a transaction this morning on my account that I don’t recognise from 2 weeks ago. It was from a website I’ve never even used and was for around £20. I’m going to report it my bank first thing in the morning but what will happen after that?

Can I find out who used it? And will I have to tell the police/will the bank tell them?
I’m worried it could be a certain family member who had access to my card and I don’t want to go down any route that could land them in trouble such as the police especially as it’s only £20 Confused

Errr.... check with your family member?

Lazypuppy · 07/11/2020 22:21

Well the bank probably won't do anything when you admit someone else has access to your card 🤦‍♀️

And yes obviously ask family member...

candle18 · 07/11/2020 22:28

The bank would only refund if it was definitely fraud. Have you googled the company as I’ve often had no idea what a transaction was then when I googled it came back to me as it’s not always obvious.

DianaT1969 · 07/11/2020 22:43

Your bank won't be pleased that someone else has access to your card. Ask for a new card, new number etc and don't share the details with anyone.
Let this £20 go if you suspect it was a family member. You'd need to get it back from them - not your bank.

Longdistance · 07/11/2020 22:52

Why has someone else got access to your account. If it was a joint account fair enough, but if you’re releasing it to someone not on your account you’ll have to get on with it. The bank will take a dim view of you for allowing access.

Floofboopsnootandbork · 07/11/2020 22:54

When I say they had access I mean my purse was in the same room as them, not that I handed over my card to them. Anyone that’s ever in my home technically has access, surely that shouldn’t make a difference?

I did ask them and they’ve obviously denied it.

I googled the website and I definitely have never bought from them or anything like what they sell.

They had access to my card, not account. And by that I don’t mean I gave it to them, I mean my purse was in the room whilst I went to the toilet.

Just say there's a transaction you don't recognise. On the couple of times I've had to call they've been brilliant

That’s what I plan on doing. If you don’t mind me asking how did they deal with it?

Does your bank have an app that allows you to freeze your card?

ShellsAndSunrises · 07/11/2020 23:08

Report it now. Tonight. Not tomorrow morning - you’ll find the relevant team is around tonight and it’s usually in the terms that you report fraud as soon as you discover it. It also means that; if it wasn’t your relative and the £20 was a test transaction, a bigger one won’t go through.

DianaT1969 · 07/11/2020 23:22

So this person you suspect used your card took a photo of back and front. As they can continue placing orders, cancel that card.
If you want to find out if it was that person is it possible to call the company and say you are unsure of the order. Give your name and billing address and see if they have registered an order/account against it.

HollowTalk · 07/11/2020 23:23

I agree you should cancel the card. I wonder whether it's possible to find out from the website which address the goods were delivered to.

TheFlis12345 · 07/11/2020 23:27

I would be telling the family member you suspect that you have already spoken to the police, they are on the case finding out who placed the order and you should have all the details shortly...

Marieg10 · 09/11/2020 09:07

If it is only £20 then it is either your debit and you don't recognise the name or the family member.

I had my card compromised and had a large number of internet purchases made on it before I realised. The back was great. They just wanted me to go through all the debits and identify what wasn't mine, they then read a statement to me and I had to agree.

I didn't have to report to the police although technically it should be reported to Action Fraud....hence why so much crime is hidden in this country.

Ironically...I have a fairly good idea how it was compromised. I was in a restaurant, tried to lay by card. The waiter said the signal to the machine was weak and took it away to get a stronger signal...he then had access to my card and could get all the details....the following morning all the debits started and I hadn't used it for a couple of weeks so was pretty obvious. Petrol stations are another one to watch

CheshireAxe · 10/11/2020 22:28

I work in card fraud for a bank. Many fraudulent Internet purchases occur without the customer being careless throughout various software/malware. Its not always to do with where the card has physically been.

It's likely it will be refunded but not investigated. The bank nor police have any resource to investigate.

Miip · 10/11/2020 22:37

Ask the website to tell you where it was sent
