SMP - does this just go automatically into your bank account?

I have been signed off with pregnancy related illness for the last couple of weeks, so maternity leave will automatically start at 36 weeks, which is November 15.

I am wondering what happens once I’m on maternity pay, I know these are silly questions but do I get it weekly or monthly, please? And does it just go into my bank account as my salary did?

Thanks.

It's paid through your employer so you'll get it via payroll in the same way you used to get your salary.

(Employer then claims back from government obviously)

Thanks - I’m not going back to thst job, does that make a difference? (Again, sorry for daft questions!)

Do they know you're not going back? Not that you need to tell them right now. Its just paid when you'd normally get paid

quietpersonattheback · 03/11/2020 09:56

Yes, my fixed term contract would have ended anyway Smile

I think they still have to pay for the duration of the maternity leave.

are they paying you statutory or is the package better than smp?

quietpersonattheback · 03/11/2020 10:08

It’s SMP, thanks. Thanks for the link demented, is there a particular part that’s relevant?

Your rights to a job afterwards if a role still exists maybe

olivesonapizza · 03/11/2020 10:30

They still have to pay whether you're going back to the job or not. You wouldn't need to pay any of it back if you don't go back (in the way you might if it were an enhanced employer package).

quietpersonattheback · 03/11/2020 10:34

Ah - no, ironically I was covering someone else’s maternity leave! But in any event I’m moving away from the area!

I know I’m entitled to SMP but I wasn’t sure how regularly it went into my bank account. I’m normally paid on the last working day of the month, so I’m guessing that will just continue until I get a new job or it runs out, whichever happens first. (But less than my original salary, sadly!)

You will get SMP from your current employer on the last working day of the month until either it runs out or you start a new job.

Thanks Smile
